Either right-click on the icon or run `xfce4-power-manager-settings` and disable it via the options found there.
EDIT: obviously I would prefer some obscure plain text file hidden away where nobody can find it but for some reason we seem to have gone the GUI route for this one, no idea why... 8o

^ Right-clicking on the icon showed that the option to show the system tray icon was already unchecked. I swear I played around with the option via right-clicking the icon to no avail. I was able to hide the icon a few minutes ago by using the openbox menu to start xfce4-power-manager-settings, checking and then unchecking the option to show the system tray icon.
