I remember seeing this kind of thread a few times over at #!:
Index » Help & Support (Other) » Problem with special characters on keyboard
So I got to thinking: a dpkg-reconfigure section in "bl-welcome"
BL defaults to XYZ keyboard layout
Would you like to re-configure your keyboard for a different layout/language?
Like, some or all of these:
console-data
cups
debconf
fontconfig
keyboard-reconfigure
locales
tzdata
xsane-common
xserver-xorg-video-NAME
Just a thought.

^ Most of that is dealt with during the installation though, and Printers(cups) is in the main Menu.
May be better to have a section in the "Intro to the BL Desktop" sticky in Getting Started?

Well, the keyboard isn't and I remember it being annoying as hell trying to find "punctuation" marks and letters that just were not where my keyboard said they were. So at least something for the keyboard early on in the game (bl-welcome.
My problem is a custom menu.

Perhaps not in the Graphical install, but I was sure the options were there in the ncurses install screens

As I recall, the 'live install' did set it up, however, when the USB stick came out and I booted off hard metal it was set to something else.
Maybe my memory is failing me, with #! I always had to setup my keyboard.

I'm always asked to choose a keyboard by the Debian Installer (graphic or not) very early in the process, and my Japanese layout (different from ASCII in a lot of symbol locations) is always set correctly.
Maybe some Latin layouts are less well supported?

Have there been many support requests about this keybord setup problem during install in the "Hydrogen/Deuterium" era?

It should also be possible to change keyboard layouts from the lightdm greeter screen. Top right corner.

I would favour reducing the content of `bl-welcome` instead.
For example, replace some of the sections with Debian's standard tasksel package — this allows for the automatic installation and configuration of SQL databases and web, print, DNS, file, mail & SSH servers (and different desktops as well).

If bl-welcome gets reduced much more, there won't be much point shipping it. The sections which appear to duplicate tasksel do more of the lifting than tasksel does.
That said, although keyboard configuration does get asked by the Debian installer, some obvious way or offer to reconfigure it in the live session would be very helpful. Dismissing it on a post-install run because the correct layout is already set seems a small annoyance compared to a big gain.

If there's an obscure or silly way to break it, but you don't know what.. Just ask me

Try:
localectl --help

Thanks for the tip, I was thinking for others though.. to be fair I almost never use the live session these days, just occasionally for testing or wiping hard drives.

Yes, that's a good idea — perhaps we could add the `localectl --help` suggestion to the Live session Introduction text box thingy YAD dialogue box.

OK, I did a BL install in Spanish today for my wife's cousin - her laptop. The Spanish keyboard installed just fine.
Two first for me:
1. - First install of a Linus system in Spanish
2. - First install to a notebook.
That sucker was old, HEAVY and solid. 2010 version

When installing with a Swiss keyboard layout I always have to reset the Swiss layout for the login once, then it stays. That was with #! as well as BL. Using boot to install, not installing with the live session.
