^^You're right. I was carelessly looking at the previous entry, for CC-BY.
But since our default licence is GPL3 it still looks as if everything is OK in this case. In fact it looks as if when we use CC-BY-SA content we can just release it under GPL3, no?

I like the graphics for the desktop, however, I have reservations on the grub menu, there's just not sufficient contrast between text and background to actually read the text at the bottom of the screen.
It's illegible enough to be considered a bug.

This Grub screen?
https://cdn.scrot.moe/images/2017/07/31/grub-2.th.png
It looks clear enough to me, to be honest. Other opinions?
Seems fine to me. Maybe some monitors show less contrast?

Maybe B_B was looking at the Grub screen in the current helium-dev install. In that case, he's right - it's almost unreadable at the bottom. I haven't yet uploaded the new config file for the text colour.

Indeed B-B was, and he couldn't read same.

wallpaper logo
The current images are, quite rightly IMO, optimized for the wider displays that most people are using.
However I don't suppose I'm the only person still owning machines with the squarer 4:3 aspect ratio that my test laptop has. The BL logo is clipped off on the right of its 1024x768 screen. (The lightdm login likewise.)
Is it possible to have it at least not look broken with 4:3 screens, while still looking beautiful on wider screens?

^ I think I have mentioned the logo position before, for this very reason: I would suggest placing it further from the corner.

Do you have time to make some thusly modified images?

According to this
https://tech.ebu.ch/docs/r/r095.pdf
title-safe area (if width = 1920px) would be middle 1296px (see page 7). However from my experience this can/will look silly in 16:9 screens. Easy one is to keep everything central.
p.s.. Another one might be a svg that positions elements based on percentages (I haven't try that and I don't know if it's even possible).

My personal solution is to run the logo conky, set at 50% size, in the nicest location wrt everything else going on. But not everyone wants the extra overhead!

EDIT: v2 starts to run into problems with the default conky at low resolutions eg 800x600, but works better than v1 IMO

I liked 2a better also. Why does moving the logo further left cause problems with conky?
I tried a quick hack (don't use this!) to just nudge the logo a little bit, and keep its original larger size:
That's plenty to get the logo in the screen on a 1024x768 display, but after comparing, the smaller logo you used looks more elegant.
Anyway, let's give priority to the aspect ratio most of our users will have, 16:9 or 16:10 presumably.

....
The conky remains the same size, so at small enough resolutions it will overlap the logo, even where it is in version 2a. I will do some more tests with VM's at various resolutions...
PS: User feedback is good

While trying out paper and papirus icon theme, lxappearance shows the exact same icons for Papirus, Papirus-Dark and Papirus-Light. Same with Paper and Paper-Mono-Dark. Otherwise papirus is a kickass theme, looks really great.
Offline
martix:
Papirus icon theme is available in four variants:
Papirus (for light theme and dark panel)
Papirus Dark (for dark theme and panel)
Papirus Light (for light theme and panel)
ePapirus (for elementary OS and Pantheon Desktop)
You can see the difference between variants only in some very light or dark icons, not all of them.
Offline
^Thank you for the hint. If I understand correctly, those icons in lxappearance are the same for all the variants, the differences lay elsewhere. Indeed, what I noticed is that with Papirus-Dark I cannot see e.g. the "show bookmarks", "new tab here" or "up" symbols in SpaceFM (being light grey), while - as the quote above suggests - it works fine with Papirus or Papirus-Light.
Offline
^You'll see the same identical-looking icons with other themes too, eg Faenza and Faenza-Dark. It's only a subset that gets changed.

Getting back in gear...
Damo isn't with us at the moment, but he seemed to like this wallpaper image, which moves the logo a bit towards the centre, and makes it slightly smaller, so it still fits on the screen with more "square" display sizes (like old laptops):
Does that still look OK on wide screens too?
If so, I'll go ahead and make it the Helium default.

Yes, I think so.
I noticed the problem myself yesterday when I installed BL to a (QEMU) VM, the cut-off logo is quite intolerable IMO so it does need changing.
EDIT: I know it's a bit late to have a discussion about this but I prefer a (grey) tile background for my live ISO image because that will accommodate all display sizes without distortion.

A bit late, yes, but also we're seriously understaffed in Graphics right now...
...and is there a serious problem with the "beam" image on different sizes and aspect ratios? (Now that the logo is moved in a bit.)
(Anyway, how can you claim "without distortion" when you're talking about a plain grey tiled image? There's nothing to distort!)

No, that seems to have fixed things.
Sorry, didn't mean to cause a fuss.

Exactly!
The only way to accommodate all display sizes equally is with a tiled background.
But I am quite happy shipping Beam as the default wallpaper, I can see no problems with it as it stands now.

^I am however right now having problems choosing a more visible grub text colour than the current light-cyan.
It's very hard to read when it's over the light areas of the beam, and darker colours like blue or black are invisible over the dark areas.
The current colour looks fine for the grub menu I think, but when you hit c for a grub cli, then any text that goes down to the bottom of the screen is almost illegible.
OP: https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic.php?id=4222
Oh dear.
EDIT
set color_normal=brown/black
(black=transparent)
is slightly (only slightly) more legible, and doesn't look as nice.
To play with grub colours, hit c at the boot menu, and enter the colours you want to try.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2 … ash_Images
A user can make the text readable this way by choosing a background colour other than "black", and a contrasting foreground. Maybe we could just keep our pretty grub menu and put a how-to on the forum?
