Re: dist-upgrade BunsenLabs from Jessie to Strech

Disclaimer: we recommend waiting a while if there is no urgent reason to upgrade, or if your computer is used for some purpose where a system crash or failure to boot would be catastrophic. While Debian Stretch is now stable, the BunsenLabs "Helium" packages are still experimental, and might be hiding some dangerous bugs...

That said, the Helium packages are at least usable now, but we still recommend backing up your data and reinstalling Debian Stretch with the experimental BunsenLabs netinstall script. See this guide: https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic.php?id=3800

---

That makes doing a dist-upgrade, while perhaps the simplest to do, potentially the most troublesome method if you hit a snag. Be sure to backup all your data!

Disable all 3rd party repositories, e.g. in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*

I would include the BunsenLabs repositories in this, and don't forget to check anything else in /etc/apt/sources.list.d

After dist-upgrade, add the experimental BunsenLabs helium repositories. See the "Adding the experimental Helium repository" section in the above linked tutorial. Then you can do an apt update/upgrade to bring in the newer BL packages. Later, when BL Helium is released, you will have to replace that experimental repository with the official one.

Don't follow this path unless you feel reasonably confident about dealing with unexpected problems.

No, that guide should not be used at all, it is far too glib and misses many important details.

For a complete guide to upgrading a Debian system from jessie to stretch please refer to the official release notes provided by Debian:
