[SOLVED] How to install a scanner?

Hello

I have not been able to install my scanner, although I have installed the correct drivers and softwares (drivers from Canon, Gimp, sane, xsane, simple scan etc.). When I launch a scan application such as Gimp, xsane or simple scan, I can only see my webcam.

How did you proceed to install your scanner?

My printer scanner is: Canon Pixma MG6851. I have been able to install the printer though.

Thanks for your help.

Did canon stuff installed scangearmp exe?

I'd find something that may detect the device, maybe

Canon scanners are hit or miss as they have rather shaky support for Linux.

Are you using the Canon drivers supplied by their website?

Canon note that all of the features may not be enabled for Linux but they do seem to have drivers that claim to do what you want.

I've never owned a printer though so I don't know if this is best practice or not.

Re: [SOLVED] How to install a scanner?

Yes, I have downloaded the driver "ScanGear MP v. 3.20 for Linux (debian Packagearchive")from this website: Canon

I had not problems with the printer. I installed the driver, then I went under System > Printers > Configure Printers. Voilà!

I shall try what you suggest brontosaurusrex and I will let you know if that worked, although I feel it will require a lot of tweaking!

There is a menu to configure printers (System > Printers > Configure Printers) but nothing for scanners, right?

I guess scanner stuff has nothing to do with cups yes, btw my old cheap hp scanner is working out of the box, so I never bothered with any 3rd party drivers.

Re: [SOLVED] How to install a scanner?

@HextorBRX - how is your printer connected. Is it wireless or usb?

Are you running a firewall? Sometimes scanners won't connect through a firewall. If so, try stopping the firewall and connecting to the scanner.

Re: [SOLVED] How to install a scanner?

I found a way to make it work! Once the driver is installed, we just need to launch Canon software, namely "scangearmp2". For those who own a Canon Pixma Scanner, just write "scangearmp2" in the terminal. In fact, Simple Scan and XSane do not detect Canon Pixma Scanners.

brontosaurusrex > The instructions you gave me are useful but they are meant for USB scanners.

By the way, could you recommend softwares that enable two-sided printing? I have to use Google Drive to print recto-verso.

"OP" = Original Post. ie edit the title of your first post. Only you or a moderator can do that.
