Hello
I did distro upgrade yesterday. Today I realized that something is wrong with interfaces and serial ports and other settings. I loost my configuration (autologon, screen resolution and etc)
Most important thing for me is serial port and network.
Serial port exist
slawek@debian:~$ dmesg | grep tty
[ 0.000000] console [tty0] enabled
[ 2.353065] 00:04: ttyS1 at I/O 0x2f8 (irq = 3, base_baud = 115200) is a 16550A
[ 7.600192] systemd[1]: Starting system-getty.slice.
[ 7.600362] systemd[1]: Created slice system-getty.slice.
but "sudo minicom" is unable to show any data from connected serial device. Before upgrade it's worked.
I added (I dont remenber what I have before) to interfaces config file:
cat /etc/network/interfaces
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
iface eth1 inet static
address 192.168.25.69
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.25.1
auto eth0
but unfortunately ifconfig show only eth0 and lo.
I need eth1 as a default (default route should be through eth1)
How to fix my problems?
Regards
SLawek

Hello
I did distro upgrade yesterday.
You mean something like...
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
...?
I don't care what you do at home. Would you care to explain?
Offline
Yes, I used this command
Offline
Anyway ... I restored image of my usb stick so I reverted back to working state.
Question is how to properly upgrade my system to latest wersion?
I'm using now
slawek@debian:~$ uname -a
Linux debian 3.16.0-4-686-pae #1 SMP Debian 3.16.39-1 (2016-12-30) i686 GNU/Linux
Offline
If you reinstalled the system, then the bl-welcome script offers to do an upgrade. Do this before you do any configuration involving system files.

I did image of my usb stick before I did upgrade, today I restored my usb stick to copy.
I didn't do reinstalation.
Silly question ... how to run "bl-welcome script"?
Offline
In your terminal, type:
bl-welcome
side note my /etc/network/interfaces:
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).
#auto lo
#iface lo inet loopback
## Original wally-jr Debian8 install
## by NOT installing the Network stuff.
# The primary network interface
# allow-hotplug eth0
# iface eth0 inet dhcp
## #! Waldorf and #! following Wheezy
## Wally-jr - Debian8 Crunchified
## and now Bunsen Labs
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
for yours try:
auto eth1
iface eth1 inet dhcp
That should work.

I need static IP for ETH1, ETH0 using dhcp.
Question is - why it doesnt bring it up automatically
Offline
Well, I have a Cable Modem and Debian set up DHCP when installing. So I have no 'network manager'.
I have no idea why it doesn't do it automatically, what network manager are you using?
I've used wicd and ceni in the past.

I used my terminal for as a serial port terminal so I prefer SSH connection to it. Changes I did using CLI so I need to learn a bit about network managers...
Offline
It doesn't. Network manager doesn't handle any interface that is defined in /etc/network/interfaces by default. I'm not sure if it can be changed, but if you list and use the interface in that file, network-manager won't touch it.
*edit* Try this from a terminal:
nmcli connection add type ethernet con-name <name-of-your-connection-ssid> ifname <interface>

Using `apt-get dist-upgrade` would only cause problems if you had added incompatible repositories to /etc/apt/sources.list,{.d/}
Have you read https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian … nkenDebian?
Please post the full output of:
apt-cache policy

To update your packages...
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
You can also use Synaptic Package Manager, many guides exist online.
Open another thread for your other issue, please.
I don't care what you do at home. Would you care to explain?

Glad it worked, two requests though... Could you change your original thread title to something a bit more...relevant to the wifi issue? This is because if someone is searching for something similar, the title should reflect that... Helps other people search and find topics. also could you added "SOLVED" to the title as well?
