Can't boot with USB

I've had this problem for a while now, have tried researching "startpaging" like there is no tomorrow, and nada, zip, zero.  sad

My bios is set to:

1. Boot other device
2. Boot CD Rom (DVD)
3. Boot WD500 HDD

The only things I have plugged into USB ports are, my mouse and Brother printer. See: gparted

Nothing else is plugged in, BUT I always get this:

Would some kind person point me in the right direction to clear these non-existant USB devices.  Sorry, they exist, that are not plugged in.
Where is the " , " I am over looking?

I have:

4GB:
SanDisk_Cruzer_Edge
SanDisk_Cruzer_Blade

2x Sony_Storage_Media 8GB

Plugging them in one at a time: (gparted images)
Sony - 8GB - /media/sector11/108D9D5A26297ED9/ = Sony 8GB
Sony - 8GB - /media/sector11/Sony_8GM/ = https://scrot.moe/image/1noKC
SanDisk - 4GB - /media/sector11/SDC-4GB/ = https://scrot.moe/image/1npnj
--- hmmmm ejecting froze mouse and had to [Alt-F2] - [killall thunar]

EDIT:
Removed [SOLVED - Problem persists . can't boot from USB

Have you tried:

sudo rm /dev/disk/by-id/usb-* && reboot

What makes you think that these mystery files are responsible for the failure of your machine to boot from a USB stick?

Also, it would be remiss of me not to request full details of the method used to transfer the (unidentified) ISO image to the installation medium.

Total loss here ... system froze tighter than a ... well, it froze ... had to "panic button" reboot and look at this:

You may have corrupted your filesystem, that can happen after a very limited number of hard resets if you're not using a COW filesystem; you use ext4, right?

That filesystem will break pretty quickly if you don't unmount the drive before powering off.

Any help appreciated.

Open a terminal and run this command:

udevadm monitor

Then plug a USB stick in and unplug it again and post the full output that appears, thanks!

No have not tried that, although as seen above the 'panic button reboot' cleared the errant USB stick.

What makes you think that these mystery files are responsible for the failure of your machine to boot from a USB stick?

Well, nothing really but since:

My bios is set to:
1. Boot other device
2. Boot CD Rom (DVD)
3. Boot WD500 HDD

and it will not boot from them so I'm checking everything.

Also, it would be remiss of me not to request full details of the method used to transfer the (unidentified) ISO image to the installation medium.

Same as always - but you are right in asking, thank you:
From my cheatsheet:

STEP 1 - CHECK THE md5sum, sha256sum or sha512sum before anything else once downloaded.
STEP 2 - Check where the USB stick is mounted:
COMMAND:
	$ sudo ls -l /dev/disk/by-id/*usb*

	WARNING: If <device> is /dev/sdb1, /dev/sdc1, /dev/sdd1, etc
DO NOT use the " number " use only the letter: /dev/sdb or /dev/sdc etc
STEP 3a - USING dd
COMMAND:
	sudo dd if=/path/to/file.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=4M;sync

EXAMPLE:
	sudo dd if=/media/10/BL_ISOs/live-image-i386-CD14.hybrid.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=4M;sync

Been using that since #! days.

Re: Can't boot with USB

NOTE: to self ... maybe reboot not needed:
EDIT: REBOOT is NEEDED!
Use:

sudo rm /dev/disk/by-id/usb-* && reboot

as per HoaS' inscructions.

You may have corrupted your filesystem, that can happen after a very limited number of hard resets if you're not using a COW filesystem; you use ext4, right?

Yes, ext4

That filesystem will break pretty quickly if you don't unmount the drive before powering off.

Normally I unmount and eject from thunar.
Just thought that since it was gone from -ls {OK learned something}

Open a terminal and run this command:

udevadm monitor

Then plug a USB stick in and unplug it again and post the full output that appears, thanks!

done:
command started,
stick plugged in
thunar opened - it's mounted,
unmounted and ejected in thunar
- - saw the command fill out sme more

Used a different USB stick though, first one is borked: only 10MB - on a 4GB stick.
(More research to see if I can recover it.)

  $ udevadm monitor
monitor will print the received events for:
UDEV - the event which udev sends out after rule processing
KERNEL - the kernel uevent

Try:

sudo apt install gdisk && sudo sgdisk --zap-all /dev/sdX

Replace X with the letter assigned to the USB stick, *do not* add a partition number.

This will completely clear any traces of a partition table and should let you re-format the stick with `gparted` (or whatever).

Anyway, your system looks normal now — do any USB entries in /dev now remove themselves along with the stick, as they should?

Re: Can't boot with USB

Let me do this a little at a time - I'm going crazy here.

I just plugged in the "10MB" 4GB stick, thunar opened it was mounted I checked the properties: YEA! 4GB (0% used), opened gparted BOO! 10MB - actual utterance made family acceptable.

mad mad mad mad mad

Well, heck (made family safe) that was easy.

OK, time to - unmount, eject and reboot.

Didn't pick up on this earlier:  Yes, if I unmount them correctly, everything is working as advertised.

Thank you.

^ yes, I was wrongly based on the images with the fat32 file system not emanated from an ISO.

The deleted text read:

I do not understand the problem correctly (?)  :8

Linux file permissions do not work for fat32 (with ntfs with dislocations)

I do think that the BIOS is set properly.  It looks like this with the "Bunsen Hydrogen" USB stick plugged in:

Advanced Setup

1st Boot Device - Removable Dev.
2nd Boot Device - HC-DT-ST-DVDRAM GSA
3rd Boot Device - WDC WD500AAKX-22ER

> Hard Disk Drives [Press Enter]
- - 1st Drive: WDC WD500AAKX-22ER
- - 2nd Drive: SanDisk Cruzer Blade

> CD/DVD Drives [Press Enter]
- - 1st Drive: HC-DT-ST-DVDRAM GSA

Boot Other Devices: Yes

Intregrated Periphals

USB Functions - Enabled
Legacy USB Support - Enabled

IF I disable HDD and CD/DVD (probably not necessary as it's empty) I can boot to the USB but I have never needed to do that before.

sad

So is this thread now [SOLVED]? (Again)

My firmware ("BIOS") has degraded over time, the motherboard manufacturers seems to push out any old s***e, unfortunately hmm

Nope.. but I'm ready to toss in the towel!

It still doesn't boot by plugging in a bootable USB and then rebooting.

Some BIOS Images:
Image 1, Image 2, Image 3 (large)

I'll have to "EDIT" the BIOS every time, to get the Bootable USB above the HDD ... so maybe like you said: "My firmware ("BIOS") has degraded over time, the mothe..." {sigh}

Here's what the Dard Drive area looks like and how I dedited it and the results when I tried "Live Session.

Starts with this, editing to look like this.

Rebooted and tried Live session that failed.
