[DONE]RFT Release Candidate for a CD-sized BL Deuterium iso

Here's an RC for our new CD iso:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7BNzo … sp=sharing
live-image-i386-CD14.hybrid.iso
sha256sum: 7c755485a9d2f67b4a08ae05c23afa7e911ccb3e7f3118816a6b8606315f0d3b

It's an i386 non-PAE kernel intended for older machines that can't boot from a USB stick, so the size has been pared down to just under 700MB, as before. A few menu items don't work, but most of the package savings are from under the hood stuff, and substitutions like mpv+wrapper script for vlc, and leafpad for geany. Also, the apt data base has been left out, so apt operations (apt-get, apt-cache...) will not work till an 'apt-get update' has been run once.

Apart from updated versions of all the Debian and BL packages, bringing the iso up to the recent "Deuterium" package upgrades, you might notice a few improvements here and there, like the popup message in the live session...

More important, please post if you run into any issues with this, so we can squash all the bugs before its "official" release.
Thanks!

Hey John, do you benefit at all from testing hardware specific iso's like this in a VM emulated enviroment for the 32-bit PAE? I'm assuming this is a Hydrogen, non-stretch based / point release image?

Re: [DONE]RFT Release Candidate for a CD-sized BL Deuterium iso

The ISO image boots and works on my ThinkPad X201:

2017-04-11-213948_1280x800_scrot.th.png

Love the message smile

Unfortunately, there seems to be some problem with the running temperatures, as can be seen in the scrot.

The laptop is very old and the fan & heatsink are both duff so it does run slightly warm as standard but not that high, for my usual light usage in OpenBSD it stays in the mid-50's (°C):

2017-04-11-224701_1280x800_scrot.th.png

Alpine Linux used to run a few degrees cooler but I don't think I've ever tried Debian on this device, I will try one of their images later.

EDIT: for the sake of completeness, this is the command used to transfer the image to the USB stick:

doas dd if=live-image-i386-CD14.hybrid.iso of=/dev/rsd1c bs=4k;sync

This is correct for dd(1) glasses

Hmm... I wonder what that is. Does htop show any processes using a lot of CPU? Did you get the same high temperatures with earlier BL systems? EDIT: Of course, you've not yet tried other Debian systems on that machine. If you have the time, I'd be very interested in how standard Debian compares.

@H_B
1) Yes VM testing can reveal a lot of issues, but not of course very hardware-specific ones, like the overheating HoaS found.
2) Yes it's a Jessie-based BL Hydrogen point release.

No, not at all — the conky in the scrot shows 3% CPU with the clock at the lower rate hmm

I suspect a kernel regression, I really don't have time to bisect either sad

Anyway, I'll try a vanilla jessie image and the new stretch rc3 tonight.

Re: [DONE]RFT Release Candidate for a CD-sized BL Deuterium iso

Update: I think the overheating was caused by a dust bunny in the fan vent  ops

It seems fine now, sorry for the noise.

EDIT: yes, the live ISO works perfectly, temperatures in the mid-fifties:

https://cdn.scrot.moe/images/2017/04/12 … -41-25.png

OpenBSD is now hovering at ~45°C, which is nice smile

Re: [DONE]RFT Release Candidate for a CD-sized BL Deuterium iso

OK, this is really getting under my skin in a bad way.

Google says:

Google Drive can't scan this file for viruses.

live-image-i386-CD14.hybrid.iso (667M) exceeds the maximum size that Google can scan. Would you still like to download this file?
[Download anyway]

So of course I ignored the warning and downloaded the file.

Hmmmmmmmm it weighs in at 699.4MB - WTFrig!

do my sha512sum check:

  $ sha512sum /media/10/BL_ISOs/live-image-i386-CD14.hybrid.iso
4105781fc99b4d11f5b9bb54c73a1eabb9441fa45a5475562f3213975c517ad932a577a0b96f5aabefc8e27e93209470e65c74e5d5c0a6fd2a7f20b4167eba53  /media/10/BL_ISOs/live-image-i386-CD14.hybrid.iso

OK, that wrong - rename the file to: /media/10/BL_ISOs/1_live-image-i386-CD14.hybrid.iso and download another saving it with "2_" added to the name and ran the same check:

  $ sha512sum /media/10/BL_ISOs/2_live-image-i386-CD14.hybrid.iso
4105781fc99b4d11f5b9bb54c73a1eabb9441fa45a5475562f3213975c517ad932a577a0b96f5aabefc8e27e93209470e65c74e5d5c0a6fd2a7f20b4167eba53  /media/10/BL_ISOs/2_live-image-i386-CD14.hybrid.iso

Matched my first download but NOT the right sha512sum check.

Currently downloading "3_" but loosing hope here.

Actually, just lost hope:  2017-04-13_130510_Scrot11.png

YUP; I feel like a door knob here!

Re: [DONE]RFT Release Candidate for a CD-sized BL Deuterium iso

Download #3 in the series.  Google says: 667MB download.  OK

sha512sum still gives the same output.  sad

 13 Apr 17 @ 13:47:15 /media/10/BL_ISOs
  $ sha512sum live-image-i386-CD14.hybrid.iso
4105781fc99b4d11f5b9bb54c73a1eabb9441fa45a5475562f3213975c517ad932a577a0b96f5aabefc8e27e93209470e65c74e5d5c0a6fd2a7f20b4167eba53  live-image-i386-CD14.hybrid.iso

 13 Apr 17 @ 13:47:30 /media/10/BL_ISOs
  $

and thunar says the file is: 699.4MB  sad

I give up!

^^ wink
-with the check you must be in the list of ISO (as in 3)
-johnraff has provided a sha256, you're are testing with sha512
