{SOLVED] Tint2 icon corruption. Intel 3rd gen i5 is at fault?

Ok so I got my new laptop in - a Thinkpad T430s. Wonderful machine.

I'm almost done getting BL setup on it. I noticed that the icons in the workspace area are slightly corrupted and have lines going through them. It kind of reminds me of early 90's graphics on an EGA monitor. As cool as that is, in today's world we like high res icons.

I'm not sure if it's the mesa dri driver (Ivybridge) or something in the tint2rc file I need to adjust. I did do some googling and as always the Arch guys have a post on Intel Grpahics - https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/intel_graphics.

I also noted a few threads on 0900's gitlab about systray icons getting corrupted. I haven't been able to find anything specific to my issue. Any input/help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Note: Some T430's have Nvidia GPUs. Mine does not. So were only dealing with the Intel GPU here. Added in case someone googles later on but they have an Nvidia card.

EDIT: Marking as solved. I used both options. Updating the graphics stack helped but there was still some corruption. I then tried the 2nd suggestion and all is well. Thanks guys.

The meaning of life is to just be alive. It is so plain and so obvious
and so simple. And yet everybody rushes aroound in a great panic
as if it were necessary to achieve something beyond themselves.

This is a known issue with Haswell (and other) generation Intel graphics cards, my machine suffers with the same problem.

You can upgrade the graphics stack, as damo suggests, but if you want to stick with the stable repositories then simply switching to SNA acceleration should fix things:

@HoaS:  I've tried two methods that worked in the past, including the SNA setting.  Neither of them work now.

Not an issue under my Unstable instances, so perhaps this will resolve itself with the next Debian Stable release.

If you are tracking sid then Debian advise that you should remove xserver-xorg-video-intel and instead use Xorg's built-in modesetting driver, see the package page:

The use of this driver is discouraged if your hw is new enough (ca. 2007 and newer). You can try uninstalling this driver and let the server use it's builtin modesetting driver instead.

https://packages.debian.org/sid/xserver … ideo-intel

I find that the performance of the modesetting driver in my stretch-based system is superb (HD4600).

@Stick:  Read my previous post again.  It's not an issue under Unstable.   wink

Actually, I'm not having the issue on my desktop running BL Hydrogen.  I only have the issue on my laptop running BL Hydrogen, probably because it has a different graphics card/chip.

If only there were some way of determining that and displaying the information here...

lspci -knn | grep -iA2 'vga\|3d'
