Hewlett Packard PSC 500

I would like to resuscitate this old Printer/Scanner/Copier...primarily as a scanner.
Have updated through Synaptic, and the system "sees" it, but when I press the Scan button she kinda lights up but doesn't move/scan. Does anyone have any clues that they'd be willing to loan me? Thanks-in-advance,
Mischaf

That way probably won't work as no program is listening for that keypress on the scanner; you'd need an extra software to make those buttons work.

However, the other way round – tell it to scan – should be quite simple.

Install xsane, and optionally the sane plugin for GIMP. Then run `xsane`, it should detect your scanner. If that does not work very well, and as another option, make first sure hplip (HP driver framework) is set up correctly. There were some threads on the forum, and there is general documentation available. In the hp-toolbox tool you then can select your printer/scanner device and select the scan action. Additionally, you get a `hp-scan` command line tool which I never used but which might do something interesting too.
