w3m images flick and disappear

w3m (you know, that pager that can convert html to txt and is also able to browse the webz) has been always in that "maybe one of these days" list. You know what I mean. Today I decided to give w3m a good go and exploring its capabilities and configs... way more obscure that ranger's, or vifm's, or you-name-it... to say the least.

I'm making some nice learning/progress but having a problem that is driving me nuts. w3m-img is working fine in ranger. I use it daily. But the images in w3m flick for some milliseconds and disappear. Whenever I refresh the page, ie, scrolling up or down, they flick and fade away again. What might be causing this?

BTW, I'm in Sid. Running w3m into urxvt. Nothing of the following seems to make a difference:

- Into tmux or outside it
- Enabling/disabling compton
- Enabling/disabling urxvt tansparency (native or not) into Xresources
- setting urxvt @ 32, 24, 16 bit or leaving it blank

No idea what else to try. Any advice or hint will be welcome.

Thanks in advance.

^How about elinks instead of w3m?

I have tried to use w3m too, however it never felt ok ...

Re: w3m images flick and disappear

Are you using an xft font in urxvt?

It may be that urxvt & w3m do not play well together:

Slightly OT but have you tried links2?

That includes a graphical mode that can even be used in the console (TTY):

xlinks2

cool

Re: w3m images flick and disappear

@iMBeCil: I prefer links(2) over the other two to be honest. It's just for the images inside the terminal plus the pager and converter functionality that I'm trying to get used to w3m. At first instance seems like a good companion for ranger, but... I agree it never felt ok to me either... I'm trying to justify having it onboard only due to its w3m-img partner just for third party purposes.

@HoaS. oh well, xft font. I didn't check without xft. Thanks for the hint. Agreed about links2. Will try swapping fonts and if it doesn't behave with this, I'll leave it silently living in the dooms again (while w3m-img keeps doing a great job).

Re: w3m images flick and disappear

i can reproduce.
and wih a bitmap font, and on archlinux.
when i scroll with page up / page down, images disappear in the manner described.
when i use arrow keys, they re-appear.
a few options seem to modify (but not improve) the behavior, namely -ppc and -ppl.

but have to admit, HoaS' xlinks2 screenshot looks far more sophisticated than what i'm seeing with w3m.

Re: w3m images flick and disappear

Yup, It's the fonts mainly. Switching to binary it displays images much better, but still a bit flickery... What ohnonot is describing I guess. And usual burden of choosing a bearable non xft font... helvetica feels somewhat ok...

Not only that, it works better overall, and much easier to grasp and get used to it.

Enough of this. w3m must be there in order to get w3m-img. It can be used to render and convert html in the cli, for html previews within ranger, works fine as a pager... for all that it's working great. Now, just forget about it can browse the webz too, and all is fine. It does a lot actually, and quite good if you ask me... ironically, excepting for what's mainly known; as a CLI browser. LOL.
