Flash-plugin: optional install via bl-welcome

First: I'm extremely, _extremely_, _EXTREMELY_ happy with BunsenLabs Linux RC1 - smooth install on laptop (HP 250G3, 4GB RAM, SSD) including display, wireless, sound; zero problems; zero bloatware; and even relatime in fstab. Damn Fast Linux - thanks folks!!!

The one thing that astonished me a bit is the silent install of flash. I understand that many people want it; on the other hand, for many people (including me) it is the one binary they'd least want on their machine, due to permanent security holes and privacy concerns.

Now BL has the first run script, in which the user can easily decide what to add and what to reject. With Java, the script already handles an issue that is comparable to flash in terms of split user acceptance.

Wouldn't that be the logical place to also ask whether to install flash or not?

This is a holdover from #!. The thinking is that most users use Flash despite the security risks, and it's still used everywhere, so it's installed by default. The security conscious can run...

sudo apt-get purge flashplugin-nonfree

I'm fine with including it or not including it.

Adding an option to bl-welcome sounds very reasonable and quite easy to implement. If there's general agreement I'll either add it to the "system tweaks" page (that deals with pae kernel and laptop stuff) or give it a page of its own like Java.

(And ask hhh to take it out of the iso.)

BL-welcome has my vote. Install scripts, while being easy to use for newbies, have important educational value: the users have to think over for a split second, why they need this or that package. Don't spare fires of hell in package descriptions. (I'll be one to install nonfree flash anyway.)

It is a good idea to make it optional in the bl-welcome script. And give it a page of it's own like johnraff suggested.

@brontosaurusrex: Chromium doesn't include Flash OOTB; it has to be installed separately (and is in the contrib section in the Jessie repos). Not sure about Chrome though; it may automatically pull in pepperflashplugin-nonfree as a dependency.

@pvsage, It appears that flash is integrated into Chrome, at least based on flash versions;

Chromium
You have version 19,0,0,207 installed < flash version
Chrome
You have version 19,0,0,226 installed < flash version

Anyway all this is of some use only if Chrome installer is part of bl welcome or pipe menu installer (Which I don't remember).

Chrome or Chromium has much better performance for flash than firefox/iceweasel. I am not so sure about jessie but in wheezy flash performance was terribly bad. I just wish the whole thing would implode so we could be done with it.

I find the exact opposite to be true. Flash video stutters and tears when using Chrome in my VM while Adobe in firefox does not. It's really the only thing that keeps me using FF.

^ & ^^ Might have to do with CPU/video hardware and/or drivers. I know Iceweasel continues to have that text entry display glitch on my AMD desktop (there it went again) even though I've gone Nvidia for the display.
