Using Unstable or Testing packages. (Audacity in my case.)

I am very happy using the default BL distribution as regularly updated and upgraded.  But...

I am using Audacity (v2.0.6) to edit some audio, and it has a known bug which is giving me problems in the default distributed version.  I understand that the Audacity package in unstable is a later version (2.1.?) and is without the bug.

Please can someone tell me how to install this package (and any dependencies) without risking problems using the entire unstable distribution.

Thanks

Plummet

Have you considered the backports solution?

Re: Using Unstable or Testing packages. (Audacity in my case.)

It's not in jessie-backports, but having already backported 2.1.2 on a Jessie base, I know it didn't present any problems.  I'll add it to my own multimedia Jessie backports repository on the openSUSE build service:

https://build.opensuse.org/project/show … evepassert

That way there's no risk of you becoming the proud parent of a FrankenDebian.

You can click on the "audacity" package to check on the build status.  Once it has succeeded, you should shortly be able to click on the "download package" link to get instructions on how to add the repository. The commands to add the key must also be run as root.  Note that this adds the whole repository--everything you see in the first page will be available--so don't run any full "apt-get upgrade" type commands unless you really want all those upgrades.  They won't break anything, though--just don't accidently upgrade if you didn't mean too.

Also note that Audacious will be building against the ffmpeg 3.2 libraries in that repo, so it will also pull in some related libraries, such as libavcodec57.  This is supposed to happen, and won't break libavcodec56, etc.  They will peacefully coexist.

@stevep: any chance on updating 'gimp 2.9 git'? ('Save for web' dialog keeps crashing here)

Thanks, I think that I have added the backport repository to my sources, but I am not seeing the newer version of Audacity as available.

I have not yet had chance to read all of the link above.  In short, what are the steps I will need in  BL environment.

p.s. The problem I have with Audacity is related to the naming of individual tracks.  Keystrokes intended to be handled in the 'rename' box are instead handles.  e.g. the delete key deletes audio not text.

Thanks very much.  Job done.  Now I have no excuses for not doing the long boring audio editing task I have set myself up for.

I don't know if it's the same thing but GIMP-Devel can be installed with flatpak and is updated every day by the upstream development team, guide here:

I'll try and see what happens.  I think the babl and gegl packages should also be updated at the same time.
