So for some reason idle and google-earth are using this ugly skin, but can't locate what exactly to change to fix that, any clues?

IIRC Idle uses the tkinter toolkit, and the skin is likely to be hard-coded.

@damo, I thought so as well, but changing tkinter skin does not change the grey on dark-grey menus.

Does this happen with all gtk themes? I'm wondering if you can get light text with a certain theme, then you can run the app with the theme that works. There is a HowTo on the #! forums: HowTo: Have an application use a different GTK theme

yes, with all, also qt4-config stuff doesn't make difference.

That rings a bell - Google Earth Linux has problems with the Qt libraries bundled with the package. Something to do with that?

Could be, so idle (in regular repos) may be the same story (unlikely)?

Google Earth 7 is using Qt 5, and the Qt 5.3.2 in Jessie doesn't really support changing its appearance much, other than setting it to follow the GTK style in ~/.config/Trolltech.conf with
style=GTK+

^ That is already set in a stock BunsenLabs system btw

Just for the record: modifying or deleting Trolltech.conf doesn't seem to affect idle.
