Hey everyone,
I have some extra loot right now, and I always wanted to play around with, and get an older computer with the PowerPC chipset. And when I say "always" I mean after I found out that the Mar Rover curiosity makes use of a modified PPC cpu. (PPC 750)
Anyway, I was just curious (no pun) if anyone runs any computer that uses the PowerPC design, to run Debian/Bunsen? I know Debian has a kernel image kitted for the PPC. If you guys have experience with it, what computer/hardware was it that you ran? I was thinking of getting an older Apple...

Really? How fascinating
I think you should post this over at forums.debian.net -- @oswaldkelso runs Debian on a PPC.
Also:
https://wiki.debian.org/DebianOnPowerPC
https://wiki.debian.org/PowerPC/FAQ
Note that failure to consult these documents before posting on the Debian forums may lead to heavy flaming

Yea! Check it out, it's obviously modified for hmm oh that small matter of space travel, and survivability on a cold desolate planet for years of constant running..
And thanks for the links, will do some reading

Just wondering about this. I am currently installing Debian Jessie on a PowerMac G5. Is there a way to set it up by just adding the repository as per https://www.bunsenlabs.org/installation … ory-method ? Are there binaries in the bunsenlabs repository for PowerPC?

Actually I just found this:
https://github.com/BunsenLabs/bunsen-netinstall
Should I just install a CLI system and try this?

Some of our scripts make use of the program yad which is currently available for powerpc only in Debian testing and unstable, so some BL things won't work if you install that way (although the method itself should work just fine). I could however crosscompile yad for ppc (we have an armhf crossbuild anyway). Which Debian PPC architecture do you need: powerpc powerpcspe ppc64 ppc64el?

It's a PowerMac G5 with a dual PPC970FX processor. I'm not sure if that's powerpc or ppc64.

Ah, just checked, the architecture is powerpc. I'll try the script. Thanks!

Turns out that debootstrapping a fakeroot for cross-compiling with powerpc target fails for some obscure reason, without a clear error message. I need some time to debug the problem, so unfortunately I won't be uploading a powerpc yad build today but sometime during the next days, depending how much time I can spent on this.

I used to run Debian on a 15" PowerMac aluminum G4 laptop; it was made the year after the titanium version. It was Debian Lenny back then. It ran OK; there was even an application called Mac-on-Linux that ran on top of Lenny.

No rush at all, this machine is going back into storage for the time being as I shuffle around some things. Thanks!
