[SOLVED] Kodi on BL, Question for the forum, is it me ?

Okay, so I have installed Kodi and everything is working fine, so I typically start kodi by terminal "sudo kodi" and we are good! This time, I decided to start kodi by start, run program "kodi" and it started fine but did not have any of my add-ons loaded, ie: my video add-ons such as : Exodus, Phoenix, Velocity! It started kodi just fine but with no add-ons. Same login and everything. I am just scratching my head! Like I said not a problem, just trying to understand what's going on.

Unless you did something special to set it up, normally when you use the "run program" gizmo on the BL menu, the program isn't run with sudo.

So that might cause the difference you are seeing.

If that is the problem, it might mean you installed the add-ons using sudo. I know nothing about kodi, so I'm just guessing. (I had to google it to find out what kodi is.) If the kodi add-ons are installed from within the application and the application was running under sudo at  the time you installed the add-ons, then maybe you will always need to run kodi with sudo. (In which case, don't run kodi using the "run program" thing.)

@topdollar:  Why have you been running kodi with root privileges in the first place?  This is generally considered a bad idea (because possible security vulnerabilities) for any application that doesn't absolutely require root access (e.g. any APT front-end or a disk partition manager).

You are very wise sir! I typically do not as a rule use sudo for running apps, I had to do it using Kodi when I was running #! for some reason back in the day and got into the habit. I had to use a hacked together version if I am remembering correctly.

how exactly did you install kodi?

I successfully backported it (and a couple of needed fonts) to jessie from sid, but it was a major PITA and took over 2 hours between dependency hunting and build time.

It has a lovely interface, I'll give it that.

BL/jussie users, install VLC, SMplayer or mpv instead and save yourself the headache.
