conky + HTML support

Since I left windows I kind of miss some overlay features which are actually pretty nice.
For example the touch support; sliding the right screen side which pops-up several settings.
I'd like to rebuild this within BL; any help is very much welcome. I'm having already troubles getting this additional package to work; it supports HTML for conky.

The described method 1 doesn't work; repository is down:http://www.kaivalagi.com/ubuntu/ppa/m-b … aunty.list

Method 2; the source/deb are from here:
gtk-desktop-info
gtk-desktop-info-data

2) Extract all the contents of the tar.gz files to an appropriate folder of your choice, the default location is /usr/share/gtk-desktop-info

3) Copy the gtk-desktop-info and gtk-desktop-info.guide script files to /usr/bin, edit them to point to the folder you extracted everything to, and make them executable

$ sudo gtk-desktop-info
/usr/bin/gtk-desktop-info: 3: /usr/bin/gtk-desktop-info: /usr/lib/python2.7: Permission denied

Not sure why the permission is wrong; python or gtk-desktop-info?

Often that is because they aren't executable.

NB I hope you are aware of the dangers of using ubuntu ppa's on a Debian Stable system?

(Moving this thread to a more appropriate section wink )

Possible that I'm more curious than paranoid.

Re: conky + HTML support

gree, i once longed for this type of functionality, and at the packages you mention.
they were dead & outdated then, they are even more dead & outdated now.

there are several ways to achieve what you want:

  • use a desktop environment that supports this sort of stuff, maybe even provides functionality to "build your own". kde comes to mind, maybe enlightenment.

  • start hacking with conky, lua and xdotool. threads here on bl forums, and on crunchbang forums.

  • i think it's possible to achieve something by coding in python. meaning, you write your own python apps, or perl or lua scripts, or...

  • look at existing scripts. they are all over the place, maybe on deviantart, gnome-look...

most options require at least a little expertise from your side.

I haven't investigated this case, but buntu packages often require different library versions, which may pull in all their dependencies and introduce you to "dependency hell". And if it upgrades libc6 then your system will likely need reinstalling due to great borkage.

Do you remember typing "I understand" at the start of the bl-welcome screens? tongue

libc6 = yeah smile I learned that on the hard way ... hehehe; FUN

@ohnonot : thanks; I'll look into it. Just started with python; will look into lua if it can handle.
