Assuming you're running the default openbox menuing system? It should just be a matter of running the command:
update-menus
I don't do much work with menus, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong!

Either add a new entry to menu.xml manually, or use the gui menu editor (obmenu) with Menu -> Preferences -> Openbox -> GUI Menu Editor
There is also a helpful menu entry: Menu -> Preferences -> Openbox -> How to Edit Menu
There are ways to have an auto-updating menu - search the forums for obamenu, Obmenu-generator, Debian menu

Actually for my above command to work, you'll have to have the menus package installed:
sudo apt-cache show menu
Check this out:
http://openbox.org/wiki/Help:Menus
I also found that just editing the ~/.config/openbox/menu.xml file, then running:
openbox --reconfigure
works as well. At least it works for me by just simple edits....Sorry thinking aloud...

Get obmenu-generator from here:
https://software.opensuse.org/download. … -generator

And the much simpler (and IMHO easier to use) obamenu here:

Shouldn't such an easy menu be default in BL, rather than the archaic #! menu?

No, the community prefer a non-auto-updating menu.

The basic idea is to come to a community decision and go with that, while making it as easy as possible for people who'd like do do things differently to do so. Some day I might write a "HOWTO" about the various options, having tried a lot of them.

Maybe you should have an open poll on it. The idea is to do things the easy way.

No poll then.

Even the guy, who actually did the scripts, (now and in the time of #!) gives the link to Obamenu means something, Damo.

^ Yes, it does: it means that we're willing to help users do what they want with the distro. Doesn't change the community's preference for a user-maintained menu.

sudo apt install --no-install-recommends xfce4-appfinder
Bind it to a keyboard shortcut with this command...
xfce4-appfinder --disable-server --collapsed
Boom goes the dynamite, you have an auto-updated search field. Press your down arrow when that's open and you have an auto-updated application list.
No, he can't sleep on the floor. What do you think I'm yelling for?!!!

^We do depend on Xfce, quite naturally.
