Needed to install mpbfan (macbook fan control), and the UXA solution to the Tint2 graphics tearing problem as posted in this thread. https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic.php?id=1294
Everything else seems to work out of the box. I didn't need OS X so I just did a complete disk install, just grub, no Refind required.
Oh, nearly forgot - I did this through the Debian Netinstall - bunsenlabs script approach, not via a full live USB.

That looks like a software rasteriser is being used for GLX rendering, how is the graphics performance with that machine?

I have several - One is a Dell Inspiron mini 10 with an Intel Atom n270, 2 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD and I replaced the wireless card with one from Intel that supports 802.11n. Also have a Panasonic Toughbook CF-52 with a Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM, 160 GB HDD. Plus my old PIII powered Pavilion. 700 Mhz with 512 MB RAM. I have a bunch of old clunkers in the garage I plan on doing something with, eventually.

It is not what it could be. Installing nvidia graphics would solve the problem (works fine on Linux Mint and Arch, on the same machine. I don't think nouveau works with the GT1030 yet).
Google tells me that llvmpipe is a software rasteriser - is there anything (other than installing proprietary drivers) that I can do?
Xorg reports

..and then goes on to load VESA
In reality it works well enough for online learning, MP4, etc so if the main problem is nouveau not yet being compatible, I'll wait.
If there may be something else that's the problem, I'll investigate further. Suggestions on where to start welcomed!

Yes, I think so.
The proprietary drivers will give a performance boost but they can be more buggy (apparently).

The meaning of life is to just be alive. It is so plain and so obvious
and so simple. And yet everybody rushes aroound in a great panic

My work machine is a Lenovo P50, 15" display, core i7, 16 GB RAM, 256GB SSD.
My home machine is a refurb Dell Inspiron 7240, 12" display, core i7, 16 GB RAM, 128GB SSD.
I think all of my other machines are on MX but I needed something with LUKS for work, so these two got BL before MX had the option... but using the Debian Installer with BL also lets me do XFS in LUKS which you can't easily do in MX yet, so these two will keep BL for a while.
