[RELEASE] BunsenLabs 8.3 (Hydrogen) RC2 Live ISOs

On behalf of the Dev Team, I am hereby announcing the release of the next batch of live ISOs for our Hydrogen release.

We have addressed many of the issues which users of the rc1 had, and did a lot of under-the-hood fine tuning, therefore we consider it to be Release Candidate #2 (RC2). For a list of changes, see this post...
https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic … 973#p18973

We recommend you use the torrent downloads to guarantee valid ISO copies (no hashsum check needed and the download will resume if interrupted), but direct downloads and hashsums are available as well...

DOWNLOADS

We also recommend the following methods for transferring the image to a USB drive...
https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic … 955#p18955

Our Live ISOs are based on Debian live-build, which does not yet support UEFI. Try switching to BIOS...

Otherwise, you can try @johnraff's netinstall script...

After trying the ISO in LIVE mode, you can install the the system by rebooting. For a walkthrough of our installer (with pics!) see the Sticky...

if i have it (still on rc1 actually) installed, won't a simple upgrade be sufficient? do i have to reinstall?

^no, just make sure your bunsen packages are up to date, and check the package list in case there's anything new you need.
@hhh could you post a public link to the current package list?

Oh yes, your personal config won't be updated. To get the latest menu, rc.xml etc, delete ~/.config/bunsen/bl-setup log out and back in. (Backups will be made of any files that are changed.) Alternatively, just copy in what you want from /usr/share/bunsen/skel.

Re: [RELEASE] BunsenLabs 8.3 (Hydrogen) RC2 Live ISOs

@everyone this might well be the last Release Candidate before the real thing, unless some nasty bug comes up...

You can all help speed that process up by installing RC2 and trying out all the scripts, bits and pieces in the nooks and crannies of the menu, suspending, audio, hardware problems... and posting any issues either in the "Bug Reports" section here, or as an issue in the relevant GitHub package. Thanks!

Downloading at the moment.
I'm curious, if the LUKS bug was fixed - and the installation is able to boot after installation, or still doesn't know the LUKS-partition.

Many thanks to all seeders. Over 90% of the downloads are over bittorrent, which keeps our server nicely cool.

64 bit (32 bit is the same except for the kernel and libraries)...

Why has the rc2-i386.iso a PAE kernel?
My ThinkPadx40 not want there to play ...   hmm

@hhh, did we drop the non-PAE kernel or was it always not there?

You got a Pentium M:

The Banias family processors internally support PAE but do not show the PAE support flag in their CPUID information; this causes some operating systems (primarily Linux distributions) to refuse to boot on such processors since PAE support is required in their kernels.

Either that or a PAE-ignorant chipset, I assume–what a shame. Let's see what we can do.

Re: [RELEASE] BunsenLabs 8.3 (Hydrogen) RC2 Live ISOs

@unklar, it was a decision we made. We plan to use the non-pae (586) kernel for our CD sized ISO. I plan to push that ISO out fairly quickly, if possible (one month or less). For now, if you want to try BunsenLabs, you'll have to use a Debian non-free image and add the BL repository to that (we haven't created a HowTo for that yet, I'll put one together this week) or use @johnraff's netinstall script (see the first post of this thread for the link). Thanks for your patience!

@johnraff's added a kernel-detection section to bl-welcome that checks for a 586 kernel and offers to install 686 (PAE). However, the 586 kernel does not work well at all with some hardware and makes the LIVE session on that hardware very glitchy, so we decided to use 686 for the full image and 586 for the mini image.

-edit- Reading this now, it sounds weird. Open another topic to discuss the best way to handle this for the release? (I'm thinking include both kernels and add the extra live GRUB menu entry so you can test either.)

Re: [RELEASE] BunsenLabs 8.3 (Hydrogen) RC2 Live ISOs

Installing(installed BL RC2. So far (VirtualBox, bl-amd64 version):

Live and installed version:
- Terminal (Right click -> Terminal) is nonstandard 83x33 characters. Not a big deal, but traditionally 80x25 is something one would expect

Fully installed version (graphical install):
- problems with Flash installation in bl-welcome, error, something like:

flashplugin-nonfree has no installation candidate

Note: I accepted all 'Y' answers, in particular to enable multimedia (except for the jessie backport, didn't allowed it). I run bl-welcome once more (and after restart), still no luck with flashplugin-nonfree.

- I pretended that BL is installed on laptop (that's what bl-welcome diagnosed). And it removed fdpowermon, but there is a leftower:

$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Calculating upgrade... The following package was automatically installed and is no longer required:
  fdpowermon-icons
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove it.
Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

Congratulations to dev team. I think that above points are minor, or even 'almost nonexistent'. Thanks for cfreating such a perfect distro.

Guys,
that's all understandable. However, the download link should point out

That is down to me hmm. I prefer a bigger terminal, so the size is a compromise.

That is down to an upstream bug in the live-installer. When installed as a Virtualbox VM (and others?) `contrib non-free` sources aren't enabled. Add them to your `main` in sources.list, then run `bl-welcome` again (or update then install flashplugin-nonfree)

Already noted. @johnraff may be able to tweak his script to sort that issue out...

Re: [RELEASE] BunsenLabs 8.3 (Hydrogen) RC2 Live ISOs

@unklar, if you can switch to a console (Ctrl+Alt+F1) and have an Internet connection, then run...

sudo apt install linux-image-586

... and reboot, then the kernel will be available in GRUB Advanced Options. Remove 686 to make 586 the default.

We just need to add 'sudo apt-get --purge autoremove' at that point in the script.

-edit- Not a problem when bl-welcome is run at first-boot. But this could have unintended consequences if run later on. Maybe just leave it the way it is now, autoremove should be left up to the user.

*facepalm* In the script...

sudo apt-get purge fdpowermon fdpowermon-icons
