Repositories/Unable to install

Hello all, Just want to start by saying I am a complete noob with Linux
I have installed crunchbang++ on my laptop to get some experience with Linux
I am trying to install some applications, but every time I do a sudo apt-get install I get E: Unable to locate packages.

Here is my source list....

[== Undefined ==]
#

# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 8.0 _Jessie_ - Unofficial amd64 CD Binary-1 20150428-23:36]/ jessie main non-free

#deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 8.0 _Jessie_ - Unofficial amd64 CD Binary-1 20150428-23:36]/ jessie main non-free

deb [url]http://packages.crunchbangplusplus.org/jessie[/url] jessie main

# Line commented out by installer because it failed to verify:
#deb [url]http://security.debian.org/[/url] jessie/updates main non-free
# Line commented out by installer because it failed to verify:
#deb-src [url]http://security.debian.org/[/url] jessie/updates main non-free

# jessie-updates, previously known as 'volatile'
# A network mirror was not selected during install. The following entries
# are provided as examples, but you should amend them as appropriate
# for your mirror of choice.
#
# deb [url]http://ftp.debian.org/debian/[/url] jessie-updates main non-free
# deb-src [url]http://ftp.debian.org/debian/[/url] jessie-updates main non-free

Just from doing a little bit of research I think I may need to get more repositories
I have tried doing a sudo apt-get install update

and still get the error

Please help!

Re: Repositories/Unable to install

I'm sorry, Crunchbang++ is unrelated to BunsenLabs. Here's a link to their forum...woops, they don't have a forum. Here is a link to their Reddit page...

Re: Repositories/Unable to install

@AcidbuRn:  Your debian source list looks fine.  However, based on the error, it appears that something is pointing to drive E:.  Check /etc/apt/sources.list.d for other lists and modify or remove as appropriate.

Uncomment the deb line, the deb-src line can stay as it is.

"E:" is Apt shorthand for "error".  Has nothing to do with the DOS/Windows/Netware drive lettering system.

@AcidbuRn:  What package(s) in particular are you attempting to install?

Re: Repositories/Unable to install

I was unable to install anything....literally nothing. After some research I found that my source list did not contain the proper repositories found this awesome site. http://debgen.simplylinux.ch/ Installed all of these and worked like a charm.

Re: Repositories/Unable to install

I'm curious what "all of this" includes if you feel like sharing your /etc/apt/sources.list file. Anyway, sorry for sort-of glossing over your OP, my comment #4 is wrong.

Re: Repositories/Unable to install

I'm experiencing similar issues, maybe for similar reasons.  Forgive me if I didn't see a solution above (it's the end of the week and my neurons are out of sync).  I am on a fresh install and didn't update the server (when my neurons are out of sync the paranoia sets in and maybe I didn't want to update from US servers).  In any case, I was having issues with the welcome script one I got to Printer Support, and when I tried installing Chrome from the pipe menu it also failed.  For good measure I tried installing MOC player and this is what happened:

[== Undefined ==]
al@lappy386:~$ sudo apt-get install moc
[sudo] password for al:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
moc : Depends: libmad0 (>= 0.15.1b-3) but it is not installable
Depends: libmpcdec6 (>= 1:0.1~r435) but it is not installable
Depends: libopusfile0 (>= 0.5) but it is not installable
Depends: librcc0 but it is not installable
Depends: libresid-builder0c2a but it is not installable
Depends: libsidplay2 but it is not installable
Depends: libsidutils0 but it is not installable
Depends: libtagc0 (>= 1.5) but it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
al@lappy386:~$

An impossible situation indeed...

I'm guessing that it has something to do with my sources.list but as I said, this is a fresh install.  Has anyone else been having this problem?

Re: Repositories/Unable to install

Anything utilizing the debian installer, if you do not to setup a network mirror at the end of the install process, you end up with a very basic sources.list with just the cdrom entries in it. Below is my BunsenLabs sources.list. If using BunsenLabs just copy the stuff in the code box, open /etc/apt/sources.list with root permissions and paste the code over what you have in there.

deb http://pkg.bunsenlabs.org/debian bunsen-hydrogen main

# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 8.0.0 _Jessie_ - Official amd64 NETINST Binary-1 20150425-12:50]/ jessie contrib main non-free

#deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 8.0.0 _Jessie_ - Official amd64 NETINST Binary-1 20150425-12:50]/ jessie contrib main non-free

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free
#deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ jessie main non-free contrib

deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free
#deb-src http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free

# jessie-updates, previously known as 'volatile'
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main contrib non-free
#deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main contrib non-free

# added by bl-welcome
# Multimedia repository
#deb http://www.deb-multimedia.org jessie main non-free

Uncomment the deb-multimedia line if you want access to that. Another option you can use is the site AcidBurn listed above. It will generate a correct sources.list for you and will even set the regions up if I am not mistaken.

Apt may complain about missing keys. If so go to the main BunsenLabs page and follow the installation instructions to download and install the key. If you need the deb-multimedia key as well, the best bet is to follow the instructions on their site at deb-multimedia.org to setup the key.

Re: Repositories/Unable to install

Thank you for your help.  I just did a reinstall and set up a mirror in the US at ftp.debian.org, or somewhereabouts.   To no avail.  It was default on the fresh install, on the welcome script.  I don't understand why more people aren't having this issue.

Your sources.list appears to have solved the problem. Here is what I had before:

Thanks again, everything seems to be going smoothly.

Several people have, and it is because they didn't go with the default "Yes", and chose "No" when the installer asked to set a mirror.

Re: Repositories/Unable to install

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ jessie main
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ jessie main

That looks scrambled somehow to me. If connecting to an ftp server you would need ftp:// not http://. To be clear though, the debian installer sets up the network mirrors, not BunsenLabs. I for instance, will have to setup the mirrors manually as I was having trouble getting my wifi to work in the installer.

Agreed it does look weird, but actually it's OK. That's a typical url that the installer might put in.

That site is utterly awful -- it thinks that wheezy is still Debian stable!

What a load of crap...

Here is an example sources.list for Debian jessie:

deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian jessie main
deb-src http://httpredir.debian.org/debian jessie main

deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian jessie-updates main
deb-src http://httpredir.debian.org/debian jessie-updates main

deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main

https://wiki.debian.org/SourcesList#Exa … 2Jessie.22

Don't add the "deb-src" lines unless you want to download source code and add "contrib" & "non-free" (after "main", separated with a space, no quotation marks) if you need stuff from those repository components.

ops

On the other hand, I don't believe I've ever seen the use of url tags in a source file.

Re: Repositories/Unable to install

I think the URL tags are due to FluxBB automanically parsing links; I see OP didn't use [ code ] tags at first.

EDIT:  I also see OP did some destructive editing, removing the output of `apt-get update`. hmm
