Year end backups -
I had Alpine up and running, it was missing some applications I needed (can't remember which ones) so I didn't look much further than a bare bones dwm install.
I'd get Alpine set up, but then half-way through customizing I'd realize I was turning it into Void but with OpenRC. Defeat the purpose of running Alpine.
Exactly how I felt about using Artix, Void etc. I felt I might as well stick with Arch, I knew what to do if anything hit the fan.

Gentoo install complete, I finally managed to work out why Picom wasn't functioning last night. Recompiled the whole system to suit my CPU yesterday.
Very happy.

Okay, last one for 2024. Just posting to say that I cannot believe how snappy and quick my computer is.
All applications just seem to open instantly, even Firefox/LibreWolf. Hardware usage is super minimal. I fully intend to move to Gentoo fulltime.

How much optimization did you do for compiling?
You must unlearn what you have learned.

I'm still working my way through understanding it all, but a few things I have done to make things more snappy are:
Adding more cores when building/compiling:
MAKEOPTS="--jobs 8 --load-average 9"
I'm using 8 of the 16 available cores, I could probably lift that but I'm fine with it for now.
Configuring the CPU flags:
CPU_FLAGS_X86="aes avx avx2 f16c fma3 mmx mmxext pclmul popcnt rdrand sha sse sse2 sse3 sse4_1 sse4_2 sse4a ssse3"
Configuring the compile options for my CPU:
COMMON_FLAGS="-march=znver2 -O2 -pipe"

@dobbie03 -
Nice. You been to the Gentoo forum? They have some threads for optimizing compiling and optimizing custom kernels. That's going to be a lean & mean rig once you're done.

I haven't yet, from what research I have done, I don't need to do much more tweaking but it's worth my time to check it out.

Very nice PackRat! Could I get that wallpaper to use? Thanks!
I use Arch BTW! If it is not rolling, it is stagnant!

I made changes to the menu. Sacrilege?
No! You're supposed to tweak the system to suit your needs.
And the system is supposed to be easily tweakable, so please say if you hit a problem there.
That said, I can't see any difference in your screenshot menu from the default BL. What did you change?

Mine has icons. And I enabled transparency, and rounded corners

^The BL menu has icons and rounded corners by default. Or did you install the 'lite' or 'base' version?

I must have installed one of those. Not sure which. I just downloaded the first iso I found.
