Do you have 8GB system memory? Your video memory + system memory = 16.
But it's RAM math so it won't be "exact".
16GB RAM and 8GB Video
then my two 8GB RAM sticks:
Memory info (GL_ATI_meminfo): VBO free memory - total: 7938 MB, largest block: 7938 MB VBO free aux. memory - total: 7917 MB, largest block: 7917 MB Texture free memory - total: 7938 MB, largest block: 7938 MB Texture free aux. memory - total: 7917 MB, largest block: 7917 MB Renderbuffer free memory - total: 7938 MB, largest block: 7938 MB Renderbuffer free aux. memory - total: 7917 MB, largest block: 7917 MB
Took your post for me to see it.
2024·08·15 @ 16:33:55 ~ $ grep MemTotal /proc/meminfo MemTotal: 16300556 kB 2024·08·15 @ 16:33:57 ~ $
I see; the 2nd RAM stick is "aux"
So how is the card running? You seeing a nice performance boost? How is the heat?

I can’t believe the RX 570 8GB is still this good!

Congrats on your new GPU @Sector11, well deserved.
Thank you. A long time coming.
And I'll have it for a while as well.

GPU is 36°C that's 9°C cooler than the CPU running normal: 45°C
I had 18 instances of FF running.
smooth as silk!
@altman - yea I'm happy too!

It was just to test to see if the card would choke. It didn't.
At the most I might run 2 or on "rare" occasions 3 FF windows open Some with multiple tabs.
Currently:
- 1 FF with 3 tabs.
- 6 conlys
- fb panel

I currently have an nVidia GTX 1060 in the big rig and looking to swap that with an AMD RX 580 card. Think that's a good idea?

@ DD - just a noobs opinion.
Is your motherboard a "nvidia" board? If yes probably not.
What happened to me is I got a new MOBO years ago, this one, an AMD board, and I had to install the 32bit Nvidia drivers for my existing graphics card that ended up starting to run a little hot.
YMMV → SO IMHO:
AMD board + AMD card, and then:
sudo apt get amdgpu
works well for me.
Actually I had "amdgpu" as the onboard graphics card used it.
versus(dot)com → Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 vs AMD Radeon RX 580

The board I have is an Asus one with AMD chipset along with Ryzen 7 5800x, so perhaps I'll get a bit of synergy with AMD cards with this system as well as better support for Wayland.
The Amdgpu drivers have been getting better and better over time so that AMD is a serious competitor now to nvidia.

Given the difficulty of getting Nvidia working with Wayland, switching over to AMD is something to consider if you're in the market to upgrade or replace your video card. Debian has committed to migrating to Wayland.

A good thing that it does the job & no screwing around as with NVidia GPUs.

Same thing on my end, If I happen to have a very great local deal on an NVIdia GPU I might go for it, when the time comes for it, but will sereously consider an AMD as it s way easier on Linux than NVidia, My GTX 1080Ti FTW3 s a good example of that, It s rare that it will work properly on fresh out of the box linux installs , of which is very annoying some times.

Guess that it would have similar performances & one wouldn t have to deal with NVidia s linux installs that can be problem some at times.
Edit; seems like the one that you already own s a bit better as of this link, but if you re no gamer it would do the job.

They have -
Light-weight system monitor for X, Wayland (sort of), and other things, too
I use conky for the status info in sway.
But I doubt the conky 1.9 that S11 prefers will run very well in Wayland.
It's for those types of reasons that I think Xorg will still be around for a while - but not default. Wouldn't be at all surprised if a Debian-X is created; like they did with Devuan.

My guess is that Debian may still keep Xorg around perhaps in something like an xorg-legacy package. Also perhaps have xorg-legacy as an option to install within the Debian Installer should you not desire Wayland..or maybe install both for having X or Wayland as sessions.
That be the best of both worlds!

Conky works fine for me on Wayland (via Xwayland, I guess?)
conky.config = {
-- Wayland support
out_to_x = false,
out_to_wayland = true,
According to the Arch Wiki, support for conky on Wayland is a work in progress...
