for now can we just leave it without any hacks in the code, ie 4 spaces for both images?.
Yes.
The next test is to add spaces before grubshot, but that makes no changes in the Real Output. Spaces are ignored for grubshot.
Leave them both left justified and move on, MHO.

^ ^ I often use spaces between images in my posts.
Sometimes I got a weird result when I clicked the Preview button.
It was always my fault because I used copy/paste from the text editor where I prepared the post.
Solution:
First, delete all the blank spaces in the post before and after the images, then add them again.
Now press the Preview button.

^ I'll be sure to try that, thanks.
I think it's the forum software. it won't allow spaces with two images in a row. Test for this hypothesis is to add text between the images. Odd that whatever code it generates, the older browser works.

^ I always use two spaces between images here (example):

The problem arises if there are 'phantom' blank spaces that we cannot see when using copy/paste.

Oh good. That hypothesis is tested.

I took you seriously and tested that, no joy; no superfluous characters.
Thanks,

^ Unlike @johnraff, I can't see your post (edit).
That's why I tried to remove all empty spaces in my own way:
gedit1 gedit2 gedit3
This is the result:

This introduction is an updated version of the excellent work by @damo - [url=https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic.php?id=6461]here[/url].
I think this should work.
No more 'phantom' blank spaces here.

OK.
I think I know what's going on.
If I try to post:

But, If I add above the word Example:
Now it looks the way I want when I press the Preview button:

Thank you @marens, any forum could use more contributors like you.
I'm making an executive decision.
Both modern browsers display the spacing as staggered, which is unacceptable. Until a real fix is discovered, let's use no spacing on either image. Not the best, but not a hack. Out of respect for @johnraff wishes, no hacks. It still sits with the spaces as requested.
Now for further info, I tried placing a paragraph between the images and it made no difference. It's something to do with bootshot. Let's replace it from scratch...
Edit: nope replaced every trace of bootshot and same output. Another thing eliminated.
When it ships the images need to align one way or another.
Thank you for your time.

I figured it out; so simple we couldn't see it.
Bootshot happens to be just wide enough to fill the forum column; it can't be pushed around with spaces.
I resized just a little smaller and all is well, the spacing works.
Trial and error if I have to.
The image suffered a little from the reduction... It needs better reduction.
Forum column width minus four spaces?
Beer's all around.
Bob
Edit:
Fired up the VM and made a new bootshot with smaller dimensions, so no resizing. Looks good. Unless something interesting comes up, I think I'm done. We done good.
Time to go forward?

You got it!
Looks good in Chromium too.
Spaces on web pages are always tricky.
Html ignores them, except for
, and with a proportional font the width of a space is not defined.
Then there's css margins...
Anyway, let's call it a day with 'four spaces' as our somewhat hacky indent for images.
I tried to search out something more solid using BB Code but our forum software doesn't seem to support anything beyond the basics.
---
One little thing remained: the horizontal line separator below the last image was too long on my browser view and got folded, which didn't look too good. All the other horizontal lines were OK, just that last one, but they aren't all exactly the same length. It's a taste judgement though, exactly what length looks best.
I shortened that bottom line a bit so it didn't fold for me, but @Bob I leave it to you whether to go over all the horizontal line lengths or not.
I also added an extra blank line around those bottom two images, but that's also ultimately your call.

@Bob, maybe you are still able to make edits to it - if you'd like to try some trivial change? If it goes through, then you will get the "Last edited by..." entry, not me.

@altman, are you trying to install our current release (boron)? There is no "Testing ISO", just use our current LIVE ISO...
^ By the way, the BL logo at the top of these forums links to that homepage.
If you are talking about installing the next version of BL (carbon) based on trixie (current Debian testing), it's a bit of work but the info is here...

@altman, read through the links I've posted before doing anything
We're talking about offering a labwc/Wayland session IN ADDITION to our Xorg session, but carbon will still use Openbox/x11 by default.
Post in the first thread-link I posted if you want more info. Thanks!
