Re: [RESOLVED] Kernel not updated after upgrade from Lithium to Beryllium

However, we are not dealing with a 'normal' installation here, because the TE has already installed kernel 5.10.0-26-686 (linux-image-5.10.0-26-686)
However, he cannot select it because dkms complains about missing header files when building the nVidia modules.

If he now installs the empty meta package linux-headers-686, for later automatic kernel updates, this does not help him because he needs the header files.
These are, as I wrote, in the header package of the kernel linux-headers-5.10.0-26-686

linux-headers-686 depends on linux-headers-5.10.0-26-686 (current version 5.10.197-1) so if @pozric installed linux-headers-686 he would get linux-headers-5.10.0-26-68.

The easiest test is just to try it!

Re: [RESOLVED] Kernel not updated after upgrade from Lithium to Beryllium

@sleekmason, yes I did update grub

@johnraff, @unklar, @hhh, I tried with linux-image-686 but Nvidia and dkms complains, so I guess I did install Nvidia legacy driver the wrong way. I remember it was a pain though, but I had to do it because Nouveau was freezing, it was some kinda bug other people had problems with that too.

I'm gonna try what you guys suggest, and I tried booting a live usb of 64bit Boron but it doesn't boot so maybe its because my ram which is low and other issues as well, because it booted fine on a friends laptop which is 64bit capable.

Re: [RESOLVED] Kernel not updated after upgrade from Lithium to Beryllium

What we are suggesting is to install linux-headers-686, not upgrade linux-image-686

There's a possibility that it is the missing kernel headers that are causing the dkms problems.

About booting or installing Boron, either 32bit or 64bit, first off, how much RAM do you have?

Re: [RESOLVED] Kernel not updated after upgrade from Lithium to Beryllium

Ok I will try to install linux-headers-686, I have 2gb ram and I tried to boot 64bit Boron. It works on the laptop though so my pc is faulty. I was afraid of purging dkms earlier etc.

I know I'm a messy user, but your nice distro has served me well anyways even I do stuff the wrong way, and I appreciate your help very much so thanks to you and the whole linux community for making nice distros so people with ancient hardware can use:)

Re: [RESOLVED] Kernel not updated after upgrade from Lithium to Beryllium

With 2GB of RAM I think you might be better off staying with a 32bit system for now.

Yeah about the 64 bit capable machine I need to get more ram

If you don't have more than 3 GB, and running 32 linux, it is better to uninstall pae-kernel.

well hell I need to upgrade everything...

Your P5B-E Plus mb, is not that bad. But a more linux compliant graphic card, would save you  lot of work. A decent card, new or used, would not cost that much.

but 64 bit is gonna be crappy on my pc because it so old and wimpy.

It is not that bad. With 8 GB ram (maximum), you will feel a big difference. And, the market is full with old RAM's...

Thanks for the help, so the best thing is to do a clean install of 64 bit Boron from here https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic.php?id=8714

But I have so litte ram, dont I need more ram for 64 bit?
You guys can close this thread.

I close the thread, with the information you make a new installation.

If you ever in the future need to close a help request, can you easily do it yourself:

From Guide to getting help
"When a solution is found, mark your thread as solved. Edit your first post in the thread, add [SOLVED] before the title. It helps others seeking working help."

But as it is more of a workaround, I tag it [RESOLVED].
