Re: Wallpapers

In keeping with others here, I found an OLD DVD with just over 400 1280x1024 wallpapers.  So, over time I'm going to post some of them here.

Let's start:

Re: Wallpapers

Sorry, they come from a collection I had for my 1280x1024 monitor.

Copy the links to:  https://www.tineye.com/  wink

Some are easy to GIMP ... like the sunset: 1920x1080

Re: Wallpapers

I made this one in Gimp with some inspiration from member HHH. I used to dabble in Photoshop years ago and never could quite get my head around Gimp but lately have found some nice plugins and helpful tuts. Hopefully this looks ok, its 1600 x 1200 px. I call it green glow smile

Re: Wallpapers

i hope nobody takes this as an insult, but...
it seems i am very sensitive to "choppy gradients"? you know, where you can see lines where colours gradually change, so it's not all gradually, but there's "steps" in it?
i hate that.
i made a wallpaper with gradients once, and i went to some lengths to make the gradients smooth. i chose the simple way out, which is basically just adding some noise, but nevertheless.
here's an article that describes what i'm talking about: https://cornwallphotographic.com/2013/07/29/banding/

Re: Wallpapers

I dont mind the gradients myself, I thought it gave it depth in a desktop wallpaper but when veiwing say landscape photography picture the gradients like that look wrong. But i wouldnt mind seeing that pic i made without them so will try those recomendations ohnonot.

How about walls, 1920x1080, with wallpapers cut up and mounted?

Re: Wallpapers

This may not look the best but ive only just picked up gimp, let me know your thoughts? Just did this from a tutorial here: Gold Text Effects

Text effects seem jagged, needs something to make it sharper/smoother. Probably better to create text effects in inkscape, another app i want to learn.

32-bit colour depth will produce the best blends but you need the development version of GIMP for that, AFAIK.

Unfortunately, the GIMP team seem to have stopped supplying flatpaks for GIMP-devel so my old guide no longer works sad

I think @stevep has it in his repositories though:

template?

For you - certainly.

I have two actually, the first one is ready to be put over any wallpaper you want as the 'background'
s11-red-template.th.png
Then "cut out" the red ... making red transparent will 'drain' some of the background.
With my eyes, I had to increase the size to 400% to get the cut tool just right. ops

And this is the light wood seen above:
s11-light-wood-template.th.png
Now nobody else take these, they are licenced: WTFPL.  smile

EDIT: Looks like this here ...

I'd need a magnifying glass to see the jagged edges ... so for me.  NICE!

i've heard that argument before, but there's a few tricks to get it nicely even on a "normal" gimp install.
first of all, the gradient tool has a "dithering" setting which should improve things in most cases.
then, i've been using Filters => Noise => hurl/pick/spread (don't remember which one; PS calls it "Displace" i think).

here's some nice explanation, but no solution.

and there's also the chance that my monitor simply sucks and nobody else is seeing it ... sad

nice gradients on this one! how'd you make it?

@ ohnonot - Thanks but the golden gradient used on the text and flame was already in the gimp gradient toolset. The gradient for the background was a radial gradient with foreground/background = #4d4932 to #201e1b - but credit to this tutorial here: http://www.gimpology.com/submission/vie … xt_effect/

about the text: i hope you used antialias.
it can also help to feather the selection borders by just a few pixels.

about my gradient pet peeve:
i found out that the banding is much more pronounced in gray gradients.
yesterday i played a little with colored gradients which i then desaturated.
best results i got by using Hue/Saturation and taking the saturation down all the way to -100 (or -99).
