I'm wondering though if there is an easy way to have something like nm-applet available via Plank. Maybe someone is using such a configuration already.

Haven't used Plank in a long, long time - you can create custom launchers can't you?

nm-applet is normally started as:

nm-applet --gtk-tray

so it starts in the system tray by default. Drop the "--gtk-tray" from the command and the window with the available networks should launch.

You must unlearn what you have learned.

Re: tint2 vertical panel

@PackRat Using only nm-applet creates a systray icon for me, even if I use it without "--gtk-tray". However I can launch the networks via network-connections from the menu (which I can also use as a Plank icon).

In this case there is still nm-applet systray icon functionality missing: I mean the window after a left click (available connection type, notifications, etc) and a right click (showing all the available network - ethernet, wifi, mobile, vpn, etc.).
