Well I'm not too familiar with debian stable or backports so I hope I'm not putting you wrong.
If this was me I'd update sources, install latest backported kernel and headers. Reboot into newly installed kernel and try doing HoaS's post #16 again.
By all means wait until someone intelligent comes along however...

I have just forked the bunsen-netinstall script and changed the package list so that it will install correctly:https://github.com/Head-on-a-Stick/bunsen-netinstall
I'm going to make a "helium-dev" branch of that netinstall repo very soon. My conclusions about package removal were the same as yours (obmenu will need repackaging), except... why did you add 'ed' and 'vim' to the default package list?? Not letting a bit of personal preference creep in there I suppose?
The section which rebuilds sources.list will need some s/jessie/stretch/g as will the Debian-version test and all the explanations of course. A hefty dose of "EXPERIMENTAL!" here and there too.
Eventually it will access rebuilt BL packages from a future "helium" repo, but meanwhile some hacks will be needed in /usr/bunsen/skel to cope with the hydrogen ones (eg themes and fonts).

They are essential packages, I will perhaps remove vim but ed is the standard text editor and should remain 8o
But seriously, that fork was just for my personal usage John, it does not represent a takeover attempt

@OP: why are you running the jessie-backports kernel?
You said that you had installed a stretch-based version of BL.
Please confirm the status of your system:
apt-cache policy
cat /proc/version

But you're sharing that fork with other users.
Debian says about 'ed': Priority: optional
but if you seriously consider it (and possibly vim) an "essential package" then you should raise it with the other devs and get it added to the install list.

Good point, link redacted.
@OP: best to wait for the official version, mine will probably just break your system.

No, no, that was my idea of humour, sorry.

Just create a new install in a same laptop and follow this steps to check it out:
1) Installed bl
2) Update & Upgrade
3) Fix VLC Playback
4) Installed broadcom-sta-dkms
Wifi still not fixed and same error msg at wl module.

Try:
sudo apt install --target jessie-backports broadcom-sta-dkms
If it still kicks out errors, run the `m-a prepare` command again, this will install all the packages needed to build the custom module.
