Whenever I speak to voice-recognition tech, I automatically adopt a very "proper" received pronunciation accent. It usually helps with accuracy. Usually.

The servant lifted off a kind of ottoman a long peacock-blue drapery, rather of the nature of a domino, on the front of which was emblazoned a large golden sun, and which was splashed here and there with flaming stars and crescents. “You’re to be dressed as Thursday, sir,” said the valet somewhat affably.

I will NEVER talk to Google! And it's not a phobia, it's "Google assumes" too much.
Because I searched for Xyz they think I'm interested in XYx, Xxyz, Xyyz etc etc. And because I live in Buenos Aires when I type in http://www.somewhere.com I really want http://www.somewhere.com.ar. And no matter what I do I can not get them to forget that .ar!
Now they want me to talk to them? I don't speak "Spanish" it's castellano here - or more to the point rioplatense and with a Canuck accent. YEA RIGHT! NOT! Let's not give Google the chance to play with that!
I'm with g33zr: GIVE ME A KEYBOARD OR GIVE ME ...well ... A KEYBOARD and a chair at home. Death will come soon enough.
Am I a "tech-phobia" - no not at all, or at least I don't think I am. It's just that I remember being able to walk downtown without being photographed or run over. I remember not 'needing' a phone when I go out, now people aren't people, they are extensions of their 15 different social networks they belong to. I see them on the bus all the time, they don't see me though, their world is in a 2 or 3 inch screen, and the music in their ears. I've even had to dodge drivers, I'm on foot crossing with a green light at a crosswalk, they are turning into the crosswalk while talking on a cellphone!
I do have "talk" capabilities on my 'tablet' I also have a keyboard for it and a mouse. I even have Bunsen bookmarked in the browser, along with a few other Linux distro forums ... for reading, I do not log in.

NPR is in its year-end fund drive season right now. (It's usually in the fall, but it was postponed because of all the breaking weather and wildfire news.) One of their giveaways was a Google home dealy that lets people potato the couch even more than they already are.
"OK Google, take a long walk off a short pier."

^Am sure it's already been around for a long time. Home furniture with everything someone could ever need, not to ever have to get off the couch. If had money to burn might even be nice. Have a cushy couch that's like a dang transformer. Push a button and 3 widescreen monitors, speakers and keyboard arm pop out. Yowza.
@Sector .. jmo, no way that makes you tech-phobic, more like more aware of what's going on and with enough life experience under your belt to know how radically some fundamental things have changed. I try to think of it as evolution, good/bad, better/worse ? I dunno but do know it's out of my hands so mostly just observe the process. Younger people just haven't seen/known anything any different. All these oddities to them are completely normal and appear to be the way it's always been.
@G33zr again ... am with you on that. Only played with the talk-text feature for a minute. Seemed too fricken alien an experience to want to really mess around with it. Guessing the bigger form factors will stay around for a longggggg time. Right tool for the job many times. Though as equally sure there's no shortage of bluetooth-etc to make working with smaller devices practical. Sheesh, it's so weird to think this lil $127 dollar cheapy phone puts many the desktop I've used to shame in terms of specs.
Things got enough hardware muscle to function fairly well as a full thin client device. Crazy ! Vll!

"OK Google, take a long walk off a short pier."
... over a lake with a bottomless pit and a "stong" undertow.
Could not agree more.
What is NPR? Found "Google Home" - Yea, just what I need, another piece of 'smart hardware' listening in on our daily conversations in the "privacy" of our living room.
No no, don't say paranoia, we've seen videos of people "compromised" because of their "Smart TV".
Define "smart"
- getting the general public to accept these things as being normal and good.
- the idea and technology of these "smart" gadgets is awesome, but in the quest for $$ and power - sorely over abused!

^NPR = National Public Radio me thinks. If anybody wins the super couch and doesn't want it, email it to me, I'll see it gets put to good use.
vll!

^ Yes; NPR is National Public Radio. For those who don't know, it's a center-left listener- and corporate-sponsored news radio network. (They don't have blaring loudness-wars-normalized commercials, but each 15-20 minute segment starts with the program's host reading a list of sponsors and their latest marketing boilerplate, like you might remember from old radio shows like The Shadow Knows - "Blue Coal, the world's finest anthracite!")
...and no, Google Home is just Google's clone of the Echo. Probably has the same software, just with a different set of voice files. Easy enough to take a short walk on a long pier and drop it into the river.

Well, no NPR here.
Couch in the right hand, Echo in the left hand, standing at the end of the pier. "Wonder which I can toss the farthest!"
BLwbg's SuperCouch. Enjoy!
We need to get a couple of those into the BL Coffee Shop and Home Theatre rooms!

As shucks Sector, and ya shouldn't have. Wait there's couches in the lounge?! All this time I've been sitting on the dang floor!
All this talk about Google is making me paranoid. Think from now on when using the comp am going to start wearing a set of those glasses with a plastic nose and mustache. If that doesn't throw em off, nothing will!

Tinfoil is for amateurs, everyone knows aluminum foil is much superior in blocking govts, Google and alien brain scans. May be a bit costlier but worth every penny.

Dang it! Now I'm going to have to Google about hamster balls. You know how many adult websites that's probably going to bring up?!
