Re: Distro-hoppers anonymous

A Merry Christmas to all.

After installing hatchery on bare metal and making some adjustments, I still need to figure out the color of the ledge.
But, that will not happen today, I have to get to my kids and grandkids.  Jq9QN6O.png

Re: Distro-hoppers anonymous

@unklar I just pushed a new iso with the librsvg packages installed so lxappearance should be fixed on new installs.  That's a cool wall and conky.  Glad you like it.

Re: Distro-hoppers anonymous

Thanks @cog.
I was looking for the logo of 'hatchery', but found I had the logo of dk and the wallpaper of @natemaia.
And, since it should go quickly, I left it at that for now. wink

Re: Distro-hoppers anonymous

Over the long Christmas weekend I've downloaded several distros and tried to install them.

Salix 15.0 is excellent, and I was also impressed by the latest version of Siduction (WinterSky, the December 12th edition).

On the other hand, Manjaro's installer froze three times when I tried to install the distro, so I had to give it up as a bad job; and Slint's installer said it needed a 50 gigabyte partition in order to proceed so it will have to wait until I get a new computer (or hard drive).

I also had no luck installing Arch Labs, which I wrote about on their forum and put down to a dodgy ISO download. In case anyone's interested;

Re: Distro-hoppers anonymous

@unklar the svg is on the homepage of the hatcherylinux.org website.  Just right click on it.  BTW there is yet another iso based on some archlabs forum feedback

https://forum.archlabslinux.com/t/hatchery-help/7024/1

The changes only effect the live-session.

This is the help forum if you're savvy.

Re: Distro-hoppers anonymous

Thanks @cog, for the information.
The .svg I had already seen, but thought that there is only with the 4 fish, without the lettering.  wink

See you around.

Another installation that worked; Gecko XFce 15.4 (Leap version). Gecko is a spin of OpenSUSE with added multimedia codecs etc. to make it more usable "out of the box" than OpenSUSE itself;

Re: Distro-hoppers anonymous

I've just completed the first update of the New Year; Siduction Wintersky, a 612 MB download after 2 weeks. It's working well though and I've just installed the MATE desktop after updating (I downloaded the XFCE version originally).

I have been using Lilidog as my main distro on my laptops as of late.  Openbox WM and I am really satisfied with it!

I use Arch BTW!  If it is not rolling, it is stagnant!

Tried Linux Lite on a virtual machine today: Nice and helpful. I was a little surprised by the RAM footprint -- almost one GB right after boot up. Also, the internet is an awful experience with Chrome and no add blocking. No other objections though.

Re: Distro-hoppers anonymous

Question:

I have used Virtualbox for years for checking out Linux and BSD distros. Sometime in December I came across someone who claimed moving over to QEMU is the thing to do and Virtualbox virtual machines could be converted with ease. Are there any benefits from doing this apart from QEMU being FOSS?

Checking out distros is pretty much all about running Live ISOs but I have a 'permanent' Linux installation in a VM and a WXP installation for legacy reasons.

Re: Distro-hoppers anonymous

QEMU speaks directly to the KVM kernel module, so your VMs should run smoother and use up less resources.

Re: Distro-hoppers anonymous

Been using Manjaro for about 6 months or longer and really like it. I like the rolling release, but I miss the stability of a Debian distro. Not that Manjaro is unstable, but I'm always scared time I update if today is the day it goes # and !.
