Distro-hoppers anonymous

I've taken a cue from eight.bit.al's review of Arch-based distros and installed Arch Labs. I had problems with a crashing installer in the past but this one (the latest) worked well.

The only problem I've seen so far, and it's a very minor one, is the font choice for menus - ArchLabs seems to use fixed pitch fonts where I think serif fonts would be better.

I also installed Siduction about a week ago, and that's working well too after a bit of tweaking to get sound working when playing Youtube videos, mp3/4 files etc..

Can't unfortunately. Most of my images (including screenshots of the Linux desktops I used ten years ago or more!) are on an old version of Photobucket where I can't get to them.

Might set up a free account just for my Linux pics, with flickr or something similar, when I've got more time.

^The first window looks similar, but the configuring seems to be done by GUI buttons & menus, so I don't think it's very related, if at all.

That's why ours is called bl-conky-manager : we put the bl- in front of all our utility command names, to avoid clashes with any other distro's things.

Personal Observations with ArchLinux Installers

Prompted by; the newest release of Anarchy linux installer. Version 1.3.4

A simple and intuitive Terminal-based (TUI) Arch Linux installer.

Multiple desktop environments and window managers to choose from
Automatic or manual disk partitioning
A selection of Linux kernels
Bash, ZSH, Fish and other shells available for installation
And many more exciting features you'd expect from an installer

Looks like ArchLabs clearly stands out from the Arch pack with its installer and deep desktop and filesystem selection. Pretty darn slick I have to say as AL's installer makes it easy to install Arch and the sane settings make it usable right OOTB with very little fiddling (Arch is known to be fiddly to setup) . I should go get this and dip my toes in Arch-land again!

I've installed the previous version of AntiX (19) in order to be able to use Portabase with the "old" colours (so easier to read). So far it's all working well.
