My goto is vsido. I still like to poke my toes in the water though.
Using Arch in this one and still playing with awesomewm. Some really cool themes out there. Interested in awesomewm, check out/do a search on youtube for msjche + awesome4. Great vids...

I have decided to celebrate by installing the latest release of 9front (out last month, not sure how I missed that):

“SOLARIS ECLIPSE”

9front now supports my Intel HDA sound card & Centrino wireless NIC (I have to add some OpenBSD-derived firmware for that) — nice!

^ 9front seems like an interesting philosophy on an operating system. How would you use it Hoas? Ive only read half the pdf file on it but it seems very specialised in regards to how it is to be used.

Well, it has Doom and somebody recently ported Quake as well and I also really like their browser (mothra(1)) so I can use it for helping out on the forums and suchlike but it is more of academic interest really.

Yeah, I signed up for that — the actual distribution is free, it's the support that you pay the licence fee for.

I never did get around to playing with it and I'm still getting emails from Red Hat about developer opportunities...

RHEL is too much like work.

I found out that the Raspberry Pi guys cut a new ISO of their PC distro that uses the regular Debian installer, so I slapped it on my Acer. What a great setup for a weak machine.

Successfully installed crux linux today on a virtualbox machine. A good learning process that i had tried earlier in the year but lacked the knowledge at the time. So now able to get to an openbox desktop. The kernel took around 30 minutes to compile on a 4 core virtual box install, gcc is another animal altogether, still compiling......

Interesting learning experience crux is, i just wish i had better computer power, which in all reality is what its all about, the hardware level and learning how software interacts with hardware to make it work.

They just last week released the Debian Stretch-based version of this, and it is great. Highly recommended for low-spec hardware. I just need time to upgrade my RPi to match my netbook.

I see from the RPi forums that there is at least one other guy with a split BL/Rasberry Pi Desktop between his machines.

Has anyone here tried SalentOS?

Can't get up the energy/desire to do the Dhop anymore. Still though like following along with you guys adventures and still check out what's available, found this sucker and the thing about texasflood sounds interesting. Apparently still active, last update was recent and appears to still be using the texasflood thingy.

Among its unique characteristics are TexasFlood boot system, which dramatically shortens the operating system's boot time, and a software update utility called LiveUpdate.

Interesting, just not enough for me to opt dorking with it atm. Gotta wonder though, didn't see many recent threads on it, all I googled up were dated. Already Debian stable based, no package found in Stretch repos that I could see. Overall seems sort of intriguing, though could also be a massive time dump if still even relevant and while still remain a fairly compulsive gnu/Nix tweaker. Doubtful to bother with even if it could still shave several secs off bootup.

Lmao Hoas, nah, just gotten lazy I guess. Plus the whole cpu not supporting kvm-etc and the dreaded being considerate of thy neighbors bandwidth cap, arghhhhh. 9front ? arghhh, a new distro and a browser brought up too !?!! Ya fighting dirty there Hoas.

Would still be interested in this texasflood deal, distro is claiming to bootup Kde in like 7secs and/or looking into other possibilities to tweak init-scripts or whatever. Texasflood, what an odd name choice for a Brazilian gnu/nix distro ? Also if it was some massive tech-miracle, why wouldn't more nixers have heard about it by now ?

I also found that using 'savefolder' option caused a hang on reboot/shutdown.
Using 'savefile' option solved this issue.

^ i tried that xenialpup today on a usb stick in ram, very cool and had no issues with it although i didnt play with that much. Im going to put it on a partition and see how it performs on bare metal. How do they pack that many applications in such a small iso file.

As I recall, there is an answer for that question in the Puppy FAQ; they explain how they create the files.
