Very good so far.

Is there a more elegant way of doing this?

schizoid()
{
local station;echo "Select a station:";select station in "Psy" "Chill" "Dub" "Prog";do station=$(echo -n "$station"|tr '[:upper:]' '[:lower:]'|sed 's/ //g');break;done;mpv http://schizoid.in/schizoid-${station}.pls;

I've been listening to schizoid too. I think only the Chill channel.

Re: What do you listen to - Internet streaming a.k.a radio and such?

I laready had this in my collection:

grep 144.76.106.52 -r
playlists-recovered/shoutcastmplay-favorites.m3u:http://144.76.106.52:7000/chillout.aac
playlists-recovered/test.m3u:#EXTINF:-1,http://144.76.106.52:7000/chillout.aac
playlists-recovered/test.m3u:http://144.76.106.52:7000/chillout.aac

It's Hirschmilch Radio! They have more than just chillout.

The mp3 stream is 128kbps, the aac 96kbps; I wonder which one would be considered better quality? I certainly don't hear any difference on my consumer hardware.

Re: What do you listen to - Internet streaming a.k.a radio and such?

The schizoid function could be adapted thusly:

hirschmilch()
{
local station=( Chillout Electronic ProgHouse Progressive Psytrance Quit )
echo "Select a station:"
select station in ${station[@]};do
    [[ "$station" == "Quit" ]] && return 0
    mpv --msg-level=all=no,display-tags=info,statusline=status https://hirschmilch.de/${station,,}/listen.pls
    echo "Select a station:"
    for ((i=1;i<=${#station[@]};i++)); do echo "$i) ${station[i]}"; done
done
}

^^ Thanks for the source and the function. I've been enjoying the chillout stream for a while, and might have gotten it here. I've discovered quite a lot of good music here.

I've wondered that too. I haven't read up on aac in years, but IIRC, its optimization is superior. Heck, mp3 is a format that's going on 25 years old, if memory serves.

Something else I've gotten here is this oneliner from bronto, for fetching the latest episode of a podcast, which I use every day.

LeVar Burton Reads (his favorite sci-fi / fantasy short stories)

alias lavar='mpv $(wget -qO- https://rss.art19.com/levar-burton-reads | xml2 | grep -m 1 '.mp3$' | cut -d "=" -f 2)'

Drabblecast (more scifi / fantasy short stories)

alias drabble='mpv $(wget -qO- http://www.drabblecast.org/feed/podcast/ | xml2 | grep -m 1 '.mp3$' | cut -d "=" -f 2)'

^ Just listened. That was a good one, and that guy is a great narrator. I had a dream like that, where dogs and cats began talking, and killing humans, and they'd only spare you if your pet would vouch for you as a good person.

I like this "absurdist fiction" one. It made me a fan of the author.

Sort of concrete ambient:
http://streams.radio.co:80/s0aa1e6f4a/listen
The station identifies as "9128".
A quick search finds this: https://9128.live/about (ah, it's an offshoot from one of those music podcast blogs glittersloth is posting).

Re: What do you listen to - Internet streaming a.k.a radio and such?

https://www.nts.live/
Very diverse, it seems.
Experimental ambient <=> seventies disco
Electronic, fuzzy, jazzy...

There's two main "radio" stations, plus 6 streams of "endless mixtapes".

And a lot of non-endless content, searchable by tags/genres. Cool.

I managed to extract the streaming links, but when I load them into my audio player (audacious) they don't identify themselves, so I have 8 entries of "NTS Radio" sad Is that the radio stations fault, or are there other audio players that do a better job there?

Re: What do you listen to - Internet streaming a.k.a radio and such?

^ Haven't I shared NTS before? Maybe in the old forum, possibly before they went standalone and were still a SoundCloud exclusive (before the petulant takedown notices). It's pretty much most people's first stop for club subculture.

My biggest beef with NTS (wrt the Listening Now thread, not radio streams) is that it's really hard to link a specific mix/set. there's no link (afaik) for an individual page with the synopsis of particular set. You can only choose between a link for the entire day's programming or a direct right-clickable "save link as" type of url.

Re: What do you listen to - Internet streaming a.k.a radio and such?

Thanks @ohnonot and apologies to @glittersloth if I missed NTS before, but now quite impressed. Seems packed with content.

Found a "genre" search page, selected Asia>Molam and it brought up a series of posts called "Paradise Bangkok".
Now listening to this one:
https://www.nts.live/shows/paradise-ban … tober-2019
Some very nice stuff on it - no molam though as it happened, that must be in a different episode.
@glitter is this not the kind of sharable URL you mean? (There's a mixcloud url at the bottom too.)

Re: What do you listen to - Internet streaming a.k.a radio and such?

@glittersloth: you probably did. I got curious when listening to Andrew Weatherall's "Music is not for Everyone" episodes from that Weatherdrive - he keeps saying "...on NTS", so I looked it up big_smile

ohnonot wrote:

This is a problem that has been bugging me with many (not all) radio stations:

  • I extract the streaming link

  • I save it/them to a playlist

  • I add some metadata to the playlist, e.g. a Title

  • When I add the playlist to my media player, it sees the URL as a file path/name, often not informative at all

  • when it starts playing, all that changes to currently playing Artist/Title, not telling me which station I’m listening to

Maybe there's something wrong with my work flow?
Is there a way to add some sort of persistent metadata?
Is there a media player that handles internet radio playlists particularly well (currently using audacious, mocp wasn't better)?

Re: What do you listen to - Internet streaming a.k.a radio and such?

^I still prefer radiotray, although it hasn't been maintained for some time. (There are forks which I haven't got round to exploring yet.) Anyway, at least you can set whatever name you like to the url, put it in a subfolder if you want. And on streams that support it a popup will tell you the current playing artist.

It does sometimes drop out or just fail to get certain streams though. Maybe one of those forks...

Re: What do you listen to - Internet streaming a.k.a radio and such?

@john & notinen

So sorry. I got NTS mixed up with Rinse.fm
I have shared NTS before (somewhere), but the linkage issue was related to Rinse.
As for why I don't share NTS sets much these days on the "listening now" thread; it's because I've limited my sharing to mixes/sets that are downloadable (Mixcloud doesn't offer downloads). Ripping (via youtibe-dl or equiv) only gives 128kbps, iirc.

One of my fave sets on NTS from a few years ago; https://www.nts.live/shows/guests/episo … nuary-2015

Re: What do you listen to - Internet streaming a.k.a radio and such?

^No, hasn't been posted yet.

Opening the page I am shocked to find out that Gabi Delgado (mis-spelled at least twice on that site) is dead!
Possibly not so relevant to non-German speakers, the lead singer of DAF (Deutsch-Amerikanische Freundschaft), he rapped some pretty good words to some pretty decent music, mostly in the early eighties & late nineties (just two examples).

cry

The hommage mix mentioned on lyl.live is here. They play DAF stuff only in the 2nd hour afaiu.
