Be glad you live in a country with sane(r) consumer habits than where I live.
It's all malls here, and they don't have much choice when you look a little closer (as in this example). I guess I could have taken a trip to the capital’s center where there is 1 shop that possibly sells the sliders only.

And it's the sort of thing you don't order online because shipping would be double the price of the product. If they'd even sell only one.

And I just counted 7 big malls in my small town. We are getting there.
But there are still much more small shops.

I miss those types of proper shopping districts with actual individual/terraced shops. I think Americans call them strip malls. Technically they still exist where I live, but are more dedicated to specialist/niche businesses or the occasional cafe or fine food joint. Your typical clothing boutique or tailor, nope. They're all in shopping malls now....

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

^ Tailor’s are definitely a niche business around here.
Not much call (and I shamefully admit that goes for me too - I could never afford tailored clothes, and what's the point in repairing those cheap child labour rags I'm usually wearing), they're neither in the malls nor in actual shopping districts, but cling on at the fringes as best they can.

It gets really sad when not only shops (*) but also cultural venues, pubs and cafes are inside the mall.
And are dying out everywhere else.

(*) And even those shops are almost always part of a chain.

The big malls dictate the prices. They buy big from the manufacturers at lower prices and hold monopoly.

There use to be small coffee manufacturers. The big ones used the local distributors to conquer the market. Then they started to distribute coffee themselves. That killed the prices and local manufacturers. That and the new laws thet are desing in such a way that only the big one's can survive.

Nice. For a second I thought you meant Sam Adams, the Boston, Massachusetts brewery, and I was seriously worried about your sanity.

I still am, but I was before, too. Sam Smith in Tadcaster is a great brewery. The U.K.'s oldest, if I'm not mistaken...

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

I'm not a fan of Sam Smiths, but I haven't tried the stout. I find it bizarre that the first items that disappeared off the supermarket shelves here were anti-bacs, toilet paper, rice/pasta and ...beer.

Most stores now are having an "old" folks hour at the beginning of the day, so they can shop without contacting the great unwashed. There is usually security on the door, and I was very disconcerted to be nodded through with a smile. I must look old now hmm

It's great though, because you get to have first choice after the overnight deliveries. Even if there is hardly any beer still sad

^ They're doing the same here, but I'm not legal age yet.

RE: Sam Smith's
I've not sampled their entire bottled catalog, but most of the beer/lager/ale variants I've tried were just....passable, I suppose? A bit of an acquired taste, some of em (usually a bit too thick for me). Their apricot beer is a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine, admittedly. The stouts are great though. The Imperial is probably my favourite (prefer it to Guinness), but the Oatmeal and Chocolate blends are nice too. Hard to obtain in my part of he world. Only one store I know stocks the brand.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

OK, let me just mention two of the greatest beers I've ever tasted, made by Belgian monks. I do not like fruit mixed with beer, beer does not make for a good sangria. But these two lambics are astonishingly delicious.

Peche (peach)...

And framboise (raspberry), the most delicious beer I've ever tasted...

Serving Suggestion

Chocolate desserts (especially chocolate decadence), fresh raspberries, ice cream with a raspberry demi-glaze sauce, créme caramel (-edit- no, I've only had my mother's and those were awful), baked Alaska, Olympia oysters, caviar. Serve at 45 °F in flute-shaped Lambic glass.

Um... yes? And what about second breakfast?

/Pippin

Yup, sometimes an advantage.

I knew I was beginning to look old when, maybe 6 or 7 years back, a young teenage girl offered me her seat on the bus.  I declined of course.  I see her quite often, we get off at the same stop.  Never talk other than a simple "Hola", or just a nod.

Belgian fruit beers, lambic anyway, can be totally delicious. The thing is, the fruit is put in part-way through the fermentation (which is already weird, relying on wild yeast blowing in the window) so the sugar should get fermented out and the beer doesn't need to be sweet at all. Often it is, though. sad

I like kriek (cherry) made by Boon. Some of the more popular brands are horrible though.

Lambic beer is like blue cheese - hate it or love it.

Another interesting "sour" Belgian beer is Rodenbach. Grand Cru tastes as if it has cherries in it, but the sourness comes from the oak barrels apparently. It's very nice anyway.

Still snowing. All those flowers on the fruit trees in the countryside are going to freeze.
No apples this year, except the imported.

The planet's gotten addicted to our polluting fumes, so it's gone into withdrawal now that industrial output's been slashed by a fifth.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

Due to Corona I have been cooking a lot more. Good stuff. You forget how cheap you can make tasty, hearty meals. Yesterday I made a stew of peas & smoked pork belly (350g peas, pork belly to taste (at least same weight as peas), 4 large potatoes (finely diced), 2 carrots (finely chopped), soup greens, 1 chopped large onion, bunch of whole white pepper corns, 2 leaves of sage and lovage, vegetable stock). Cook for 2.5 hours and let it rest for .5. Add potatoes only after 90minutes. Serve with rye bread. Tastes 2x as good when reheating the next day. Fed me lunch & supper for 2 days smile

The biggest difference besides working from home 100% when compared to before is that now I'm taking 2hrs of lunch break so I can cook and eat in peace smile

@twoion There is a joke about the title from the newspaper Politika from 25.3.1980
"In 2020 there will be flying cars everywhere and we will go to Mars for holiday vacations."
On 25.3.2020 the title in the same newspaper says:
"The baking yeast arrives in wednesday."
wink
