Cannot make "bootable" partition

As my name suggests I am Sector11 and I am having the worst November in my life, some of you know about that.  And now with my computer decides to get into the act!

My computer died 3 days ago, along with both HHDs! Don't ask what happened, I do not know.

Finally got a new computer:
- ASUS PRIME A320M-K mobo with 16GB RAM
- 1TB Western Digital HHD

My problems with BL Installer

1. Partitioner does not ask if partitions are "Primary" or "Logical".

2. Will not allow me to create a bootable partition.

Any help appreciated!
PLEASE!

Edit: On a tablet cannot access my backup ATM!

Re: Cannot make "bootable" partition

Did you set up the partitions before trying to install? In the past I found that was a way to get round some issues.

Re: Cannot make "bootable" partition

Hi damo ... free biscuits for replying.

Not sure I understand.

The partitioner sets them up...

First it created a 1mb EMPTY partition
Next I create a 25GB partition for /
- it will not allow me to add the "Boot Flag"
but I go through the whole process ...

Process fails because there is no place to put Grub

Re: Cannot make "bootable" partition

IIRC I used to have a similar problem, which is why I do the partitioning and formatting beforehand.

Re: Cannot make "bootable" partition

S11, sorry for your loss ...

Similarly as damo suggested, perhaps the solution it to delete ALL existing partitions just before you select 'Guided partition'?

It is possible that the partition's deletion can be selected only in 'Manual partition' menu ...

Re: Cannot make "bootable" partition

@S11 Looked up your board and it's a UEFI one.  So unless you turned on "Legacy Boot" in your BIOS you need to create a small EFI partition.  I usually do about "512 MB".  Then tell the installer's partitioner to use as EFI.

Also if you choose to go with UEFI over Legacy boot you'll want to disable "Secure Boot" in your BIOS.

Re: Cannot make "bootable" partition

@iMBeCiL - no please, no loss yet, unless you are talking computer!

It was a brand new drive. Was not formated.

However that being said after the first attempt failed, I tried a second time.

All partitions were there - flagged as do not use.
So I went through the prosess again, still with no "primary" or "logical" selection and setting boot option not working.

However, it installed perfect, put grub on the master boot record and is now installing updates.

But very, very slow, sometins down to b/second.

Must change https:/ /cdn-aws . debian . blah.blah.blah to something faster!

Looking at another 19 hours here.

BUT: I am here.  That's good  cool  wink

Edit  hhh to imbecil  sorry!  I'd blame the tablet but we all know me!
I'm th OOPS! guy.  wink

Hi cog

I choose Legacy.
I had no idea if BL could boot with UEFI but I recall horror stories years ago.

UEFI doesn't like secure boot?

Re: Cannot make "bootable" partition

Glad you're up and running!  Helium does and we got UEFI working in Lithium-Dev too.  Secure boot hasn't been fully implemented as of Buster yet, something we've been researching.

Re: Cannot make "bootable" partition

Hello, my friend.  hmm

As @cog said: You now have a board with uefi.
Separate yourself from the "old knowledge" to
primary + logical
Bootflag etc.

If you can, install the new lightium-iso. Even if it is not the "end product", I assume that the installer on it is best for handling your uefi-board.
If your network connection is so slow, it's not the best idea to update. You need the box!   smile

Re: Cannot make "bootable" partition

Congrats on your new computer @Sector11 smile It's maybe time for me to redo my big rig which is UEFI capable but in legacy mode now. A rebuild is in the cards anyway as I want to switch the boot drive from an aging Raptor to a Samsung EVO860 SSD. In addition wanted to  boot Win10 as well.

In addition going to set up a large disk in GPT format.

Re: Cannot make "bootable" partition

Still a handful of tweaking to do, but I'm going slow, I have a lot of other things on my plate at the moment.

BUT like I said:  I'm here!  and happy about that.
