^ it seems that "soon" is pretty well defined this time.
I'm just a little miffed that, due to the Librem 5's success, the price went up a full 100$.
Yes, it used to be 599.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

I live and work in Charleston. One of the two jobs I work houses and sponsors a non-profit radio station that's 2, almost 3 years old, I know the founder and played a benefit for them when they initially started fundraising. We covered this Radiohead song, I played most of the lead guitar part on electric fiddle. It was a success...

Anyways, I've proposed an hour-long dub reggae program for their Sunday night lineup. After several conversations with the programming director, I think I can safely say that he's impressed with my voice and my musical pedigree, and that they're eager for the content. I hope to record the demo show this week with them. Wish me luck, this is a cool thing and I hope it comes to fruition.

^^Where's the [like] button?

Listening to OhmRadio right now, and whatever show it is it's playing a nice selection somewhat to my taste.

Radiohead went to school in the town where I grew up. It was a Public School (ie private school) though, and was after my time, anyway.

Nice station, actually - at least right now.

When does the show go on air @hhh (UTC if possible)? Not decided yet?

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

Not decided. I have a playlist and a script and they're going to record my demo program in-studio. That means scheduling a time to record, which is tough. Then it gets reviewed (maybe not very thoroughly but I don't know, the very young Manager is impressed with my knowledge and experience and he has slots he needs filled), but it will be a couple of months still, I think. Hopefully half that, but you never know. I'll keep you updated!

Sample of what I'll be spinning. 25 (?) year old music, I think it's ripe for a comeback. We have a serious stoner college here. monkey

Actually, I'll be taking it back to early Black Uhuru with Sly and Robbie, that's late seventies/early eighties. That's 40 years of hot dub right there.

I could do eight weeks on Bill Laswell alone.

Oh, did I mention that I have an incredible, low, sonorous, Connecticut American, ready-for-radio voice? The girls will be so disappointed when they meet me, all their fantasies will collapse and I'll see it on their faces. Welcome to radio.

White intellectual urban older socialist capitalists (guilty, though I'd much prefer anarchy) and whomever tags along is my best guess. My show is going to follow an existing reggae show, I have no idea what show that is. I'm not really a listener of their programming. I have heard some really good music there on occasion, though.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

I just pulled out my long forgotten eee-pc from the bottom of my crap top pile with "Helium" installed. The keyring were of course retired, so I had to manually install the current.  The apt update showed 220 packages to be upgraded. big_smile

I am going to start to use it as a music streamer, nothing else. It is so annoyingly slow that you can only do one, task, at, a, time.  Looking forward to install "Lithium" on it of course, when that time comes. smile

Finally, I have decided to to stop using Dropbox from now on. Have not decided yet what to use instead though, anyway the need for a cloud storage is not very big either. It is more a question of convenience. I do not trust the cloud with the important stuff, that I keep separated, the cloud is only for quick and handy access trivia. hmm

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

@dolly Maybe owncloud? Among other things you could set up a backup for important files on a friends computer. Your files only get hosted where you specify and not on some company's servers.

I use Dropbox mainly to synchronize scripts etc that I'm working on between desktop and laptop computers. It's very handy to be able just to open a file and carry on working on it. For this it works very well, I don't have to give it any thought and problems are rare.

There are no privacy issues with this, but yes I would be careful about what you have out on that black cloud.

My congratulations!

Personally I find cloud online storage very important - not only for syncing but also for the occasional image, media or text upload.
I like to be independent of commercial entities and also be able to upload something larger every now and then.

May I suggest 2 options to anyone interested:

  • Your own server at home. It isn't so hard, and should be even simpler when you use it for yourself only (no actual www server). Solutions for constantly changing IP addresses (that's how ISPs do it) exist, sth dynDNS sth sth.

  • Shared hosting for very small money (2€/month). You probably don't even need a domain, can just access it via its numerical IP

Of course the friend's computer (server) also sound very viable.

Owncloud could be installed on any of these, but I don't really see the need when an ssh connection will do. Or a simple web server with SSL & authentication.
Or NFS with kerberos (something I'm dreaming of).

A self-signed SSL certificate might be a good idea for personal use. It's just as safe as the "Trusted" ones.

This is a good option, though it is still not cheap. Like Hetzner has 100G for 2,90€/month.

A drawback of these options is oftentimes the connectivity. Between SFTP, WebDAV, FTPS, SMB, ... you need to find something that works reliably from all client devices.

For Android, I've tried using the rclone app to sync my camera pictures to such a storage space but the issue is that it's less automatic and reliable than say uploading pics using the OneDrive app, which on top provides also shareable links and suchlike.

That's the reason why I'm now paying 2€/month for 100G Microsoft OneDrive storage. The automatic tagging and geolocation map view, album creation and shareable links are welcome additions. Perhaps hosted NextCLoud solutions are the closest option (some starting at 2€/month for 100G too), at least they have apps available for Android & iOS.

The show must go on.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

OHM Radio update... the guy I've been pitching to came through and lent me the most-unbreakble microphone (Shure SM58), 10 feet of indestructible xlr-to-1/4" cable, and a Focusrite Scarlett Solo interface unit, and said "Keep them as long as you like."

It records to the right channel only thanks to my soundcard or whatever (input 2 = right-channel), but I can fix it in Audacity. The result after a little pitch-shift-down added, reverb added, short delay added...

When I did this sort of stuff in the 90s, those were the de-facto standard vocal mics in all Live situations.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

^ ^^ There's this joke that used to go around about the SM58 being the best (non condenser) mic for people who weren't good singers. No idea if there's any truth in that or not, but it does make a bit of sense since it has a slightly dark, veiled signature to it, which makes it a good choice for live stuff or studios that aren't damped sufficiently. Hope that Scarlet has a strong enough mic preamp, since the 58 does need some gain to sound good. Tip: Unscrew the ball off the 58 and it'll sound more like a 57 - a bit more crystalline but also a bit more unforgiving - though that'll probably benefit instruments rather than vocals.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

Every now and then saw a neat quote by some guy called Yogi Berra. Knew nothing about him except guessing some connection with Yogi Bear, but finally looked him up. Yes, some pretty good quotes. I liked:

Yogi Berra wrote:

But there are lots more here:
