Similar things could be said about The Magicians.
I was talking to some friends about how I liked Harry Potter and would like to see more in that vein.
Some person warmly recommended this show, saying it's like "Harry Potter for young adults".
Yes, I can see how that is true. Launched four years after the last Potter Movie, starring (and catering to) the exact age group of Deathly Hallows + 4 years, and taking all the structural elements of the Harry Potter story:

  • A school for magicians, now a university called Brakebills (the name "Hogwarts" is delightfully ambiguous, I don't see any of that in "Brakebills", do you?)

  • a main crew of 2 couples plus one or two more

  • some sort of mission against an evil magician

Etc. etc., there's many more parallels on the surface, but all this is wrapped around a very mediocre american action soap opera with a plot that is questionable from the very beginning and gets boring after a few episodes (constantly shifting conspiracies, the end goal grows distant with each step they take towards it etc.).

The characters seem like 2-dimensional copies of Harry Potter characters - just one example: the meek yet sexy, large-breasted and bespectacled (nerdy) Alice. Yuck.

If you truly crave a follow-up not to the costumes but to the spirit of Harry Potter, "Fantastic Beasts and how to Find Them" (2 full length movies) is a much better fit.

Re: What are you watching right now?

I am a sucker for romantic type movies, especially ones set in ages past. Well acted for the most parts imo.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (2018)

In the aftermath of World War II, a writer forms an unexpected bond with the residents of Guernsey Island when she decides to write a book about their experiences during the war.

Re: What are you watching right now?

I just found a free legal streaming service called TubiTv.Have my doubts about how free it is in reality, probably similar to google free.Ive streamed one episode of a show i watched years ago called The Long Way Down with Ewan Mcgreggor and Charlie Boorman but could not get HD resolutions only SD from the unregistered streaming. This looks like a place where they have gathered up the worst of the worst in Tv/Movie history, some gems in there but few and far between.

Re: What are you watching right now?

You know how Marvel sometimes take the p!ss out of their own superhero cr*p? But somehow it always seems a little false?
Well this show is doing it properly.
Superheroes are nothing but totally corrupt media whores.
The Boys
Not sure why it's called The Boys though. Despite the scene quoted, both sexes are present.

Oops, forgot to show you the actual supeheroes!

It's Friday the 13th, with rare Friday the 13th full Moon. Time for some classic horror movies, starting with a favorite, Creepshow.

I watched some of that. It has the same qualities as the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which is existentially scary. For some reason, if it involves serial killers, or people in captivity, I nope right out of there.

Re: What are you watching right now?

The guy is surely having fun, but this year he kind of went overboard with it imho.

The last funny thing I managed to gather from his channel was a path to divorce that I've noticed happening a while back. This might not be an accurate chronological order of events, since I haven't nor I am not really following his channel. This is my really vague reconstruction of events based on occassional view of his videos.

- Bragging about saving on all kinds of stuff (alright, being cheap is maybe a must for him because he might have a plan to invest long term, so I didn't really take it as a huge red flag)
- Bragging about moving in to his parent's place with his wife (alright, this was a big oof imho)
- Bragging about investing huge money into some stocks (I think)
- Bragging about losing those $200k (wife must've been thrilled)
- Bragging about getting divorced (at this point I really laughed)

Or maybe sexually ambiguous.

Re: What are you watching right now?

^A satire of a hypersensitive culture.
There is an obvious reference to Orwell with 1+1 and 3x3. One versus three students.
And there are four students with the fifth, making noise in the box
(in Orwell's 1984 politically correct 2+2=5).
It's also very dystopian, like the Orwell's novel.
But that's what the satire does best, makes fun of the real world.

Why on earth did they spell it "Educayshun"?
He does not only point in the direction of the absurdity of the modern educational system.
No, he spelled it with an intention.
In that dystopia there are more important aspects of education than mathemathics and grammar spelling.
That is not supposed to be called an educational system that is entirely different category.
The education that prioritizes on something else rather than education therefore "Educayshun".
But that's just my opinion.
