So I clicked and saw a list and thought whats the big fuss ... then came the fine print at the bottom:

10,640,332 Results in this Full Report which contains 3,389,497 redirects. · Page 1 of 483,390

10 million, 3 million and Page 1 of OMG!

I should have added in that information, thanks.

I wonder what percentage of the total internet that is? Seems like a lot.

Oh, you guys are finding out that CloudFare is the middleman of the internet?

4chan's /g/ has been parroting for a long time that CF is botnet, and they flame threads that advertise 1.1.1.1, CloudFare's own passive out-of-the-loop web usage data collection... or in non-schizophrenic terms, DNS. Heck, it's like Google and CF are in direct competition for owning the web itself.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

I had brain surgery about a month ago and bought myself an Acer Swift so I would have something to do while I was recovering in the hospital. Unfortunately, my coordination was affected. When I got home, I promptly spilled an entire glass of milk on my new laptop and ruined it. I was upset with myself at the time, but things are finally getting back to normal. Friend of mine let me have his old Acer. About three years old, but it has an i7 and does what I need it to. If I can trust my last MRI, the cancer is gone. I have every reason to believe it will stay that way. This has been a wild ride, but I'm optimistic.

Just realized that the New Screensavers was canceled. That sucks. I was a huge fan of The Screensavers some years ago, when it was on TechTV. Always liked Leo Laporte and Patrick Norton. Oh well.

Equal exchange. A life for a life - the Swift's for yours. Fair trade, I say.

Now all you need to do is dope up and win a Tour de France.

I had a friend many years ago who is a very talented potter that had a brain tumor and lived through the ordeal of brain surgery. Some very talented surgeon's out there too i should add. Congrats on battling through and don't sweat the small stuff for sure.

Although the Ryzen 3000 series has been released, the 3900X is not available anywhere. What the heck,  AMD?  Friend of mine wants one so I've been calling everywhere. Whatever they get, they're selling out of almost immediately.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

Xfinity's data cap is BS. It's much easier to tear through a terabyte of data than you might think. Two of us in the household did a fair bit of streaming this month, but it was all in standard definition. And we just got a text saying we are over the halfway mark. If all four of us had been streaming regularly in high definition, we would have been screwed a long time ago. An extra $50 per month for unlimited data is ridiculous considering how much Comcast charges for service in the first place.

Anyway, rant over. Comcast is evil is all I wanted to say.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

It surprises me how often people say "you should have read the EULA/TOS" when it comes to privacy or security related issues. Do these people actually understand what's written in these documents which are deliberately obfuscated with mountains of legalese piffle? To admit you understand them is tantamount to confessing you belong in the same circle of hell as lawyers (and rapists and murderers), is it not?

^ the same goes for the line “If you’ve got nothing to hide, you’ve got nothing to fear.”

Nothing surprises me anymore these days though, i believe we have passed a point of no return in regards to privacy, i hope i am proven wrong but "money talks and bullshit walks" as the tried and true saying goes.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

glitter and cf ---

@ glitter and let's not forget the endless depth of "third party" links that lead to fourth party, fifth party and to boldly go to a depth no man has ever read.

Because if someone says they've "read them all" they are worse then a pathological liar  - politicians I believe they call themselves.

@ cF - we passed that point long before the implementation of the first internet cookie.  Companies were buying and selling computerized lists long before that.  Think back a few years, you were sitting at home the phone rings, "Hi Bob, a good friend of yours gave me your phone number ... "  Telephone company sold a list of newly acquired phones.

"Hi this is ABC Bank we understand you are not happy with (your bank name) and were wondering if you would .. {click}  Banks, selling lists of clients.

privacy ~ noun rare
 1. the quality of being secluded from the presence or view of others
 2. the condition of being concealed or hidden
 3. an abstract idea that is as archaic as the wheel. (according to S11)

My brand new hi-tech phone. Plum Star, and my provider tried very hard to convince me I "needed" 8g - YEA! RIIIIIGHT!

"Gimme the 1g Plan with no frills please.!"
I call it the "S11 Phone Home" Plan.

All you web and firefox experts; Is there an easy way to determine which specific about:config change (or combination of changes) broke a certain website? I mean, I know the obvious ones, but for anything more I find myself tediously backtracking one setting at a time.

Can't remember. tongue
Was just another forum/image-board related to my other interests.
Ironically, the BL forum helped me figure it out with an error message. Turns out my network.http.referer. settings were a tad too strict.

I don't expect hand-holding (after all, FF does warn you about "voiding the warranty"), but it'd be nice if there was a "let's see what your crazy tinfoiled about:config bastardization broke today" plugin or landing site. hmm

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

a belated thanks to glittersloth for answering my stupid questions!
I still didn't get a new laptop, but my vision of replacing my smartphone with a dumbphone + small laptop hasn't died yet.
Was browsing old models this morning; living in Nokia-land, there's a lot of them still around, and cheap (~10€, unless you go for the "classic" 3310 which might go for up to 50€).

Careful with new dumbphones: Their operating systems can be just as bad as Android, you just don't have the screen to enjoy the advantages... they're not actually really dumb.

But there's new Nokia models with Symbian OS aplenty, that's dumb enough for me.

Phone only with no internet capablilities should do it, assuming I get a sufficiently small laptop with a SIM card slot for internet only.

OTOH, I might place a bid on an N9 with MeeGo, the best thing Nokia did shortly before getting the Kiss Of Death from Microsoft...

Are they all 14"? That's a bit large for me I think.

Fwiw, many modern laptops are physically smaller than older ones thanks to the smaller bezels around the screen, so a 14.1" today might be as small as a 13.3" from a couple of years ago. Your sleeve might fit.

I did factor that in.
My old netbook had a 10" screen with huge bezels; I guess one could squeeze 12" into that form factor. I'm hoping for extremely narrow bezels.

I still own and use a Nokia 700 which is a minimalistic smart-phone with an OS called Nokia Belle which was the very last off-shoot of Symbian. I can surf and read emails if I really feel like I must but none of those new pay-apps and parking-fee apps are available. It is really easy to switch between 2G and 3G so 99.something% of the time the phone is in 2G mode and the battery lasts for just under a week of my use. Btw, its has a GPS and off-line maps were part of Nokia's standard offering -- not something I use even once a year though.

Yes, I have played with the idea of getting an N9 just because it is still possible (second hand though).

of course it's used!
Just found 2 interesting articles:
https://medium.com/other-oses/awakening … dd596e540d
https://wiki.maemo.org/Resurrect_your_N9

But really I'm not so sure about this - I think I want to go real dumb with my phone.
I have 2 SIM cards, one for phone/SMS and the other for internet only.
So I'd need to find a minilaptop that has 4G support, that would be perfect.

Anyhow, I'm watching the bids. 3 more days to go, still at 20€ big_smile
