Re: BunsenLabs Wikipedia entry deleted

Too early to submit I think?

Let's get some citations like Linux Format, and also look at some other distro WP pages for reference.

And anyone who notices something, and feels up to it (THX1138? lamarca? ohnonot? Jimbo_G?), please go ahead and make additions/changes! In fact, the less I (with my declared conflict of interest) touch it, the better it would look. eg if my edits were mostly in the realm of toning down the "promotion" feel...

And when we figure out what the deal is with screenshots, some image or other.

It says on the page it won't be removed unless there's no editing activity for 6 months, so we have time to get it right.

I agree there is no rush, I'll try to find some time to make some edits over the next week.

Edit: I have now made a few changes

I suspect that artwork off the web may fall foul of their rules. Anyway, scrots should feature OOTB BL images IMO - and links to the forum threads and BL DeviantArt showcase?

it'd look pretty much like /bŭn′sənrləˈbs/ I *think* lol
Think is, I never actually studied phonetics, so I wouldn't want to state that's right as it's a case of proving I don't know if I state it tongue

IMHO, we should contact the WP and explain the Bunsenlabs entry was deleted after a discussion and the Bunsenlabs official web page wants to recreate a new entry according to the rules.
Why do we have to do?

^I think if we have a nice informative (but not promotional) standards-compliant draft ready, we'll be in a much stronger position. Better to talk to WP then IMO, rather than now.

Convincing them we're over the notability hurdle by enough margin looks like the key to me, they will, and frequently do, leave patent drivel up if it's about some[thing/one] famous enough. Even if they pin a "This article has issues" type banner at the top for drivel about famous.

I meant let's wait till we've got the draft page in good shape before clicking the "submit for review" button.

Any edits, fine, but please, no-one click that button without discussing it here first!

Considered it done.

johnraff wrote:

IMHO Bunsenlabs Linux should be the core of the entry (article) - our history, our development across the years

BunsenLabs Linux is a community continuation of CrunchBang Linux, a Debian derivative. Bunsenlabs Linux is/was the continuity of the CrunchBang project abandoned by the developer in February 2015........

If we apply the notability guidelines to the letter, then I don't think we can make a watertight case for having a BL Wikipedia article. But then, neither would quite a few other distros... So I think a well-written article with a fair number of secondary sources should stand a chance of not being taken down.

From Wikipedia:

If a topic has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject, it is presumed to be suitable for a stand-alone article.

Does anyone have access to the Linux Format review mentioned earlier in the thread? It's issue 202: https://scrot.moe/image/aEmB6 and the PDFs are only available to subscribers. As a published magazine, this is one of the best sources we have.

I made a few more changes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:BunsenLabs_Linux

@lamarca (and anyone else), feel free to edit as you suggested earlier in the thread. Incidentally you have to click "publish" when you make changes to the draft, just don't click "submit your draft for review".

Thx. I was talking about to find any Linux Format subscriber.

As a side note, WP doesn't allow you to watch to unpublished articles. It makes senses:)

For reference, ArchLabs have a page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ArchLabs
which says they were inspired by Bunsenlabs.

That page was also considered for deletion: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia … n/ArchLabs
but the decision was made to keep it because of three outside references:

Articles in Linux Insider, It's FOSS, and StationX are significant coverage in indepedent, reliable sources and so passes WP:GNG.

(All of those articles also mention BL of course.)

OK there's a LinuxInsider review of BL too (Dec 7, 2015): https://www.linuxinsider.com/story/82837.html
Linux Format page pdf's are locked away, though the DVD iso (torrent) is freely available.
This careful and detailed Helium review: https://www.ordinatechnic.com/distro-re … ium-review
Distrowatch Helium review is quite sympathetic too: https://www.distrowatch.com/weekly.php? … bunsenlabs
A look at openbox, which takes BL as its example: https://www.ghacks.net/2017/04/28/a-loo … w-manager/
"Ubuntu User" review, issue 28 / 2016: https://www.ubuntu-user.com/Magazine/Ar … -successor
And BL included in "5 Live Linux Desktop Distributions You Should Know": https://www.linux.com/learn/5-live-linu … hould-know

Not a review, but parts of BL used in Raspberry Pi: http://raspex.exton.se/?p=931

I went though the forum thread but the above seemed the most worthwhile. No time left to attempt to use any of them on the WP page though. Feel free...

Re: BunsenLabs Wikipedia entry deleted

tl;dr: crunchbanglinux.org is now completely dead.

Some Wikipedia and some DistroWatch cleanup is needed...

The CrunchBang entry lists us as a successor and states that the #! domain redirects to bunsenlabs.org...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CrunchBan … BunsenLabs

The footnote for that brings you to the wayback machine, which indeed shows the redirection stated. However, go to the link there for CrunchBang at DistroWatch...

https://distrowatch.com/table.php?distr … crunchbang

The Home Page listed is, of course, http://crunchbanglinux.org/

As you see, Philip seems to have let the domain expire and someone has purchased it and no longer directs it to us, but to a static page on the history of CB (where we are listed but not linked, nor are there any other links) and a separate "History of Linux" tab that produces a 404.

WhoIs lists the domain as being registered to GoDaddy.com

I'll email DW when I can to inform them of the now bogus #! links, but if anybody else wants to handle Wikipedia, be my guest!

-edit- No time like the present, email sent to DW.

i'm pretty sure it was like that for many years already.

crunchbang.org still redirects to bunsenlabs.org, and crunchbang.org/forums is still up - although the content is somewhat broken, as it has been for some time now.

I'm getting a 404 page for those URLs. The #! favicon is displayed in my tab, though.

I guess Jessie at DistroWatch received my email, all the #! URLs are on the description page still but all linkage to the site has been removed.

That's very weird. Are you sure you're not mixing up crunchbang.org and crunchbanglinux.org? Corenominal made that switch a long time ago, and the old crunchbanglinux.org was snapped up.

crunchbang.org is still working as far as I can see.
