Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

Maybe those security guys were just entering the mall together before going to there posts? It's also custom to go around in large premises in pairs. It's for their own security but also for security of the client: with two guards around, situation is less likely to escalate, and also that hot headed guard stays calmer, when s/he has that benevolent colleague backing up. If they are both short tempered, their boss, who made their schedule, is incompetent.

I know, what sort of person you mean, though. I can imagine a young bald guy in his black overall holding thumbs under his accessory belt, clinging his handcuffs, feeling inscure but very hard trying to look dangerous and competent. On the other hand, I've also met some vocational students in safety training, and they are usually peaceful and cold blooded.

Martin: you know perfectly well that private security personnel don't carry guns in Nordic countries.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

@nore: there were FOUR of them, not two.

I know you probably got used to the sight of them by now (i guess Finland must be the country hit worst by this plague, every supermarket - not mall - has them), but I didn't. Everytime they pass me I feel a strong urge to show them that I will not be intimidated. (i know it's childish. i don't have the problem with real police so much, they are legit.)

Martin wrote:

Thank you for proving my point with this comment.

No, they're not some sort of meta police, they are adorned garbage collectors moving up and down the corridor to create a clean environment for people. Yes, clean. "Safety" is a label plastered on to hide their real purpose.
Because the paying audience fears coming into contact with the dirty underbelly of society.
A random enebriated poor person is not threatening by definition, but that is what people feel threatened by.
They have lost the ability to recognize a real threat. Probably all thanks to said "Security".

Shopping malls are promoted to be "meeting places" to socialise, providing seats and comfy corners. But only to those that also go shopping there and don't smell. The doors are open, but they're not really open are they. That is what "Security" is really there for.

We used to have shopping malls completely without "security". I don't think they were any less secure.

I could now launch an equally long rant on paramilitaristic fetishes and the very real danger of intimidation through uniforms...

^ +1 for a news website that totally works without any javascript or cross-site requests.
and of course +1 for adam curtis, whose documentaries i have seen.

a classical journalist whose medium happens to be film

the pantomime-isation of politics.
Every morning Donald Trump wakes up in the White House, he tweets something absolutely outrageous which he knows the liberals will get upset by, the liberals read his tweets and go “This is terrible, this is outrageous,” and then tell each other via social media how terrible it all is. It becomes a feedback loop in which they are locked together.
[...]
And it becomes a perpetual, infernal motion system, which is a distraction. It’s not a conspiracy. It’s a distraction from what’s really happening in the world.

Been thinking to pull the trigger on buying a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 770 pro headphones for around 120€ (250Ω). My old Sennheiser eh350 are perfectly fine but cost 50€ in 2011 when I bought them; the cushions are due for a replacement and I've already replaced the cable for 15€ each 3 times, so I've paid a lot more for these than I'd like to admit (although they still sound perfectly fine and I use them every day).

The biggest advantage of the DT 770 is that I would've finally own one pair of headphones to use on the train (the EH350 are open headphones like the dt 880 which I would buy for home use only, so no good in that kind of environment); so far I only ever used those earbuds coming with phones/MP3 players and while there are high-end models available, the quality never justified the cost and all of those sound horrible anyway.

My old, worn-out, very good-sounding eh350 headphones with their cheaply built frame:

https://cdn.scrot.moe/images/2018/11/19/eh350.th.jpg

Travelled 10s of thousands of miles with them, used them at home and then some. I'll keep them around for the next decades for sure. I see that some sellers ask for 200$ for these nowadays, that's pretty lunatic smile

Received and testet the DT770PRO though I will return them:

1. 250 Ohms do absolutely not work without an extra amplifier (or external DAC+amp, since the builtin one on my laptop has some background static noise and starts to distort sound at max volume). I would have bought an extra amplifier like the Fiio E10K for an extra 80€, but

2. The coiled cable on this thing is a) not detachable, b) heavy as hell, c) not secured as tightly as I wish in the ear cup. Knowing myself, I'd rip it out tomorrow by way of forgetting I had the headphones on or rolling the cable over with my desk chair. A little less important, but the build quality is still disappointing (plastic cups feel cheap, ends of metal arch have plastic tips, also feels and looks cheap).

Even though without driving these to their full potential (no amp), they already sounded better in mid-range pieces (= without much bass) than my current headphones, so these are definitely amazing headphones, but not for me.

For the last twenty years or more of my life, I have literally said "Bah, humbug!" to the holidays. This year feels different, somehow.

Here it is, the most festive thing I've done in 2 decades, the Bunsencycle: Holiday edition.

70€ for a used 2014 Mac Mini 24 hours before auction end.

250€ for a used 2014 Mac Mini 12 hours before auction end.

Why do people want to prevent me from buying this for 100€? If everybody who bid would have just added 5€, we'd be at 95€ only.

Who would pay 250 Euros for an almost 5 year old computer?  That's mental. That's like $600 NZD.

Well, I want it for <100€ because I'm looking for an almost noiseless, very compact home server, don't want to build one myself, am overwhelmed by the heaps of junk on sale, and in terms of build quality (used one at a job) and limited expandability (fits 2 hard drives/SSDs) this little box is really amazing. Lots of display outputs, Iris graphics, gigabit ethernet + Thunderbolt. Drawbacks are that you cannot replace or upgrade the RAM (it's Apple). Also, I actually like OSX and wouldn't mind having one machine around.

The market somehow agrees that these are worth 500€-900€ new and up to 250€ used…IMO because of the RAM issue and lack of repairability anything over 75€ for a used device is overpriced.

@twoion, I get why you would want to pay around 100.  But what is up with peoples fascination with anything Apple and paying big dollars for semi/obsolete gear?

people just don't know how to use ebay (and similar sites).
it's logical that you never start bidding until just before the offer closes, and never more than absolutely necessary.
(afaik auctions close at the specified time or some time after the last bid)
good thing with buying electronics: the market is flooded, and if not this one, then there's surely another one. cheap.
