Sleadford Mods again.

i'm sure Williamson would have a laugh about that wikipedia article.

BTW, live, well-mic'd acoustic violin and 'cello FTW, they sound absolutely badass.

The 'cello's full name is violincello, though now cello is the norm.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Franz Schubert ~ Piano Trio No. 2 in E-flat Major, D.929 ("Wanderer")

Schumann hailed Schubert’s 9th Symphony for its “heavenly length”, but that phrase could be just as appropriately used to describe this trio, a work of miraculous diversity whose vast swells and deflations have a boundlessness about them. The ingenuity on display here is extraordinary – the implausible modulations throughout (Mvt 1’s first theme is in Eb, the second in B min), the way a tiny motif briefly wedged between the first 2 themes of Mvt 1 expands into an ocean of sound, the gorgeous melody of Mvt 2, the baffling intricacy of Mvt 4’s sonata-rondo form.

Perhaps because I’m more used to choosing from the piano literature, choosing a performance of this work to showcase was annoyingly difficult, because recordings are often lopsided – Schiff/Perenyi is too piano-ey, while the recent Mutter/Trifonov is far, far too violin-centric. This recording is close to perfect – lyrical without gilding this work’s undercurrents of pain, confiding in the slow sections, gripping in the climaxes, deft in those many wonderful modulations. And when the music really should be left to speak for itself – Mvt 2, for instance – it’s left just as it is, perfect.

My God, it's so wickedly, beautifully perfect, isn't it?

Kudos to the uploader for posting the score. The trio's interpretation is dead-on to what's notated.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Something with slightly better fidelity to finish, written about 25 years after the Trout. Brahms, Piano Trio in B Major, op 8 - Ma-Ax-Kavakos

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ck9m_Vi … Hw_71ug51B

Freaking Brahms, it's as if he has a premonition that Tolkien will write LOTR and composes the whole trilogy into the first movement of that trio.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

We (another band I play in) were jamming on a drone in Bm (with incidental discords) and it went on quite a while, getting more and more intense...
The friend who was sitting in on musical saw said it reminded him of Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
I'd never heard of them, but there's plenty on YouTube.
This came top of the list: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZwQeZh6rP0
Still at ~9m but not bad so far.

EDIT Now at 34:52. This is really good. Makes Pink Floyd sound like Top 20.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

^ I used to post a lot of GY!BE at the #! forum, back when I was on a heavy post-rock trip. Haven't kept up with the scene much lately, but (aside from the traditional suspects you've probably heard of like Sigur Rós and Mogwai) you should also check out Explosions In The Sky. Also, your part of the world has a dense post-rock scene, believe it or not, though they tend to employ a more fusion'ed sound with math-rock or modal jazz elements mixed in.

I've been on a proggy vibe the past day, for reasons unknown. Just finished a sitting of Steven Wilson's The Raven That Refused To Sing (and Other Stories), though I'd personally just rename that album, "Guthrie Govan's Guitar Solo in Drive Home (Surrounded by Meandery Steven Wilson Filler)". Had enough now. Blegh!! Gonna cleanse myself with some space disco.

Edit:
Nah, screw the disco. Late 90's jungle;

Obviously I wasn't paying attention. This is the first time I've heard of post-rock or any of the people you mention. Likewise the Wikipedia page which is full of interesting stuff to look up. Last night several people at the gig we[1] had been practicing for recommended This Heat - now listening to their first album.
(Sounds a bit rougher than GYBE.)

[1] A recent second music project - improvised sounds, riffs etc + poetry. A while ago someone said it reminded them of Can, now it looks as if it might fit into post-rock if the genre still exists.

hmmm.
GY!BE is a special case, but you should have a vague understanding - although i really hate terms like "post-rock".
apparently Velvet Underground (the band that hated hippie music) were the first. makes sense to me.
looking at the listed bands there, i seem to be some sort of "post-rock fan".

quick & dirty list:

VU, duh.
Talk Talk (their last 3 albums)
P.I.L with Jah Wobble
Stereolab
Tortoise (and watch out for John McEntire projects)
Radiohead's Kid A
Sigur Rós

A recent second music project - improvised sounds, riffs etc + poetry. A while ago someone said it reminded them of Can, now it looks as if it might fit into post-rock if the genre still exists.

i know from experience: whatever improvised (rock) music you make, people will compare it to a band (usually the only one they know) that also does that.
+1 for Can (I'm from Cologne big_smile) though.

I'd love to hear your sounds.

Good thing about third millemium pop music: the creator's age doesn't matter anymore.

Don't worry. Most bands who're classified as such hate the term too. It's such a vague term, no one really knows what it's supposed to mean anyway.

Not often, but you do find some good stuff every now and then. I know a couple of "professional youtubers" who scour sites like those for royalty-free music to use as BGM for their videos.
