Hi from the UK

Hi! My name is Sam, and I found BunsenLabs on friday night!

I collect Thinkpad laptops, and had a T40 I'd fixed up from scrap and got looking nice. But XP crawled along, so did some googling and came across Bunsen.

Linux isn't my strong suit, inact I feel very out of my depth, but the install was very straight forward, everything worked out of the box and I'm typing this on it now. It zips along very happily (1.6gh pentium M with 1gb RAM).

Thought I would register and say hi, as i feel very out of my comfort zone here, but want to give it a shot. I read things like 'edit the xml file' and such and really don't know what to do, but that's probably a good place to start. I won't be doing much more than flicking about the internet on this thing, it hates youtube, so any of that is out of the question.

If I can get it to remote desktop into my PC in the loft that would be nice, as well as tweak the programs menu (this is where I started reading about XML files!). making the caps lock button work would be fab too, again i've seen it mentioned as an issue, but not got as far as doing anything about it yet!

Either way, hello, thanks for having me!

Sam

Hi Sam, welcome to the BunsenLabs community. smile

Have a look round the forums, especially the getting started section...

When you have some specific question, feel free to post a topic in whatever looks like the most appropriate section. People will be happy to help you.

Awesome news, this is exactly what BL should be about — giving new life to old hardware cool

'edit the xml file'

I share your pain... cry

There are menu options for GUIs to edit the menu&rc.xml, I use them a lot.

making the caps lock button work would be fab too

Ah yes, that old chestnut.

The next release will have a working caps lock OOTB big_smile

Hi! Welcome to the forum!

If it hates youtube, you could give hooktube.com a try.

Otherwise pay also attention to the menu entries of the openbox menu, there is a pretty good help section there. It might be a bit unusual first, especially after windows, but it's a good way to learn about linux.

Re: Hi from the UK

Thanks all! I'll start to play around. I guess my main issue is I don't know what I want out of it! I don't really have a use for the whole laptop, so the fact that I can type this to you now using it is good enough! I just need to potter about and see what I fancy really, if I find an amazing feature then I'll jump on that!

Been listing some old tat high value items I don't want anymore on ebay with it tonight, did it fine, and with a much nicer keyboard than my usual Probook!

Going to start reading the sub-forums and see what I fancy, might have a go at sorting the caps lock out too, that is mildly annoying, hard to break 30 years of habit!

I did it!

Thanks! One annoyance out of the way! Just the annoyance that IBM fitted now which is an FN key where my little finger thinks CTRL should be! That's not bunsenlab's fault though!

hooktube looks really nice, but after the searching part which is smooth, the vids sadly don't start for me (chromium on android 6) / there was this snaptube app which was great but they oc removed it from the store / i still use it on my old tablet.
edit: I can dl the vids from hooktube but not watch them before dl.
