Just a cool piece of software for checking out your hardware.

Had played with it long ago and forgotten it. While messing around rediscovered it and so sharing. Install the lshw package, run it in terminal with "sudo lshw" and it'll list out much info about your system.

Reason I was so pleased with the thing is it made me aware I've got an empty RAM slot on the laptops mobo and could upgrade this sucker to 8gbs if desired. I won't ... as I don't use what I've got already but it was good to know. If nothing else, you'll have the joy of scrolling through a bunch of mystical looking terminal output about your box. tongue

Kinda related tip: Visit the crucial website memory advisor page, enter your make/model and they'll tell you what type of RAM chips are most suitable for your system. Oh course doesn't mean you have to buy crucial's brand, though you'll have a good idea of what to buy.

Nice find, thanks BLiz!

I also like inxi & hardinfo but my all-time favourite has to be

sudo lspci -knnvv

glasses

HardInfo is mediocre IMO.  The only thing going for it is that it's graphical.  I much prefer using inxi.  I suppose I could use a search engine to find out, but is there a benefit to using lshw over inxi?

lshw  shows a LOT more info ... techi stuff.  I use it.

But I prefer inxi with my little group of alias anytime.  inxi is more human readable.

inxi does weather based on your ISP location, and some "sensors" as well

That does it .... next time someone says I have a problem I'm jumping in with:

Re: Just a cool piece of software for checking out your hardware.

+1 on lspci, definitely useful and +1 on hardinfo not being much to speak about gui or not also think it's lack luster and someone can learn much better ways to get whatever info they want in gnu/Nix.

Inxi is my tool of choice and it's definitely readable and understandable.
