Web hosting alternatives?

Not for my parents this time.

This time it is about my humble (62 MB all counted) web. It will vanish Nov. 27 as my ISP's new owner has decided they will not do web hosting anymore. So far this has been bundled with my internet connection.

So where to find a new host for a small, private web site?

I started to look in Sweden earlier this evening but then I remembered you guys came with some good leads for email services a week ago. What about web hosting? In Germany? What about Estonia? Estonia is often reported in mainstream media as one of the most digital countries on this planet.

/Martin

PS My mum has spent this week in Tallinn so that email issue has been put on hold.

Re: Web hosting alternatives?

I'm also interested in what people might suggest here. My current hosting service is mildly OK at best.

Looking at bunsenlabs.org, we're currently sponsored by netcup...

FWIW I use Hostgator for the 17 sites I manage.  https://hostgator.com

Re: Web hosting alternatives?

For a static site I'am fine with github pages (mostly due to not wanting to pay anything).

Re: Web hosting alternatives?

You can have a web page at github without even pretending to develop code?

They say, they say: "Websites for you and your projects."
p.s. Another interesting host I found the other day, the new Geocities: https://neocities.org/ (untested)

Re: Web hosting alternatives?

Github: Interesting. I didn't know that. My boat is definitely my project -- since we bought plans back in 1984 or 85... The up-beat info video says I can use Jekyll. I have used Nikola for my web. Will I have to convert to Jekyll or can I just upload any static web site?

Netcup: Looks pretty sweet. Disclaimer: I find all web hosting sites I have studied tonight kind of obfuscatory. This one at least clearly states price is including VAT but is 1.99 euro/month an introduction price or what I can expect to pay even after the first year? And, again, can I just ftp a static site to their server or do I have to build it with their tools?

Neocities: Sounds like a bit of fun and free (up to 1 GB) without involving 'the evil empire' :-)

I have also realized I have to re-design my web as its current structure is quite messy as I had to tailor it for what service my ISP offered. In the end it will be much easier to maintain.

Re: Web hosting alternatives?

A friend informed me about infinityfree recently, that might be something else to look into potentially as well.

Does your reply cover both github and Netcup?

I guess static web sites create the least amount of hassle for web hosters but sure I am not.

Re: Web hosting alternatives?

I am getting close to making the move now and it struck me I have to pick a domain name. If domain high-jacking is still a thing I want a name I can live without. Is domain high-jacking still a thing? It happened to a friend some 15 years but I haven't heard about this 'business' in later years.

Re: Web hosting alternatives?

Netcup for now.
New domain name: http://www.reflectometrist.eu/

All files uploaded but now show :-(
Maybe a matter of patience.

/Martin

PS I placed my order earlier this evening and got a message that a netcup employee will handle it and then they will contact me. I expected an email next day or so. They called me on my cellphone 15 to 20 minutes later!
