Yesterday I emptied a bucketcup of clear water all over my Cherry MX Board 1.0 mechanical keyboard. Nuff said, I immediately unplugged it, removed all keys, dried it using a hair dryer and just sun. Unfortunately, the keyboard does not work anymore so I guess it's garbage now (USB device not recognized by any OS). I'll give it a week of additional drying and if it doesn't work then it will get recycled.

BUT OF COURSE THAT GIVES ME THE EXCUSE TO ORDER A DUCKY ONE 2 for an obscene price. And so I did order a Ducky One 2 full-sized white backlit keyboard with cherry mx browns smile https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/in … ail&p=3731 Stay tuned for pics.

Happy to report that after letting the board dry out for 1 month and plugging it in, the old keyboard turns out to continue to work just fine smile Immediately put into service at my second desk....

Nice. Which FiiO product is that, one of their DACs?

It's a FiiO E10K Olympus 2 DAC + headphone amp. First venture into that field, I got it cheaply. Needed because the line outs on my laptops can't drive my 80 Ohm Beyerdynamic Custom Studios well. The only laptop that can do it without amp so far is the MacBook, but that one is from work and not owned by me.

That is an excessive amount of padding.  Maybe Microsoft are competing for the  "Most Excessive Use of Padding in the Titlebar to Make it Look More Useful than it Actually is" award?

It's called:

"Hey, they make 52" monitors now, lets fill-em up!"

OR maybe as Dobbie03 said, going for the award!

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

I use a 42" monitor.  I don't need that much info in a title bar or that much padding big_smile .... If I used titlebars that is.

I am starting to agree with the people saying the GNOME team is setting out to be the textbook example of what not to do when designing a DE.

Japanese are very well trained, there would be a revolution here if such measures were in place..

The Japanese were selectively bred for compliance.
For about 400 years the samurai had the authority to kill any lower rank for a large number of offenses including 'failure to behave as expected'.
Eventually the rebellious ones were eliminated from the gene pool.

Body is an empty vessel, eugenics can't change that.
Behavior depends how people are raised, when people live in a culture of compliance most become compliant.
The samurai were replaced by the police and courts, only the death penalty is not so often today.
'failure to behave as expected' carries the financial and the isolation (jail) penalties.
There are still people who pay the fines and the people in jails despite the 400 years of brutal samurais.
There are genetic mutations, however you are not going to find a rebellious gene if you look in there.

But if you look in https://github.com/trizen/pipe-viewer you'll find an excelent little youtube viewer app. big_smile

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

I bought an SD card on eBay, same price as on NewEgg. But... GParted would complain the backup GPT table would be corrupt no matter what I tried. Turns out it was counterfeit!

I want to highly recommend the 'F3 - Fight Flash Fraud' tool to check your flash cards when you first get them: `apt-get install f3` or https://github.com/AltraMayor/f3

I took a photo of F3 saying the SD card is counterfeit in the dispute. Now the seller will have to pay for return shipping because I invoked the eBay Money Back Guarantee.

Everything I put data on I don't like to buy from shady sources (which IMO ebay is). There are only very few manufacturers who make good chipped and spinning storage, I'd stick to them. I'd rather buy a cheap CPU than skimp on the persistence layer.

I need to buy a ~4TB hard disk for backup soon. Can you mention some of those reliable HDD manufacturers?

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

My own strategy is to cycle through three HDDs for backup. Three different makes bought years apart to spread the risk. None has failed me so far: Seagate, WD and Samsung.

I also have a *very* old iOmega that is too small for backup these days. It still soldiers on though.

When I bought and built my current 'ride' some ten years ago I was advised to use Samsung HDDs on the grounds of them being reliable. So far so good.

None of this says anything about the reliability of models on the market today tough. I know from my own experience that things can go down-hill pretty fast when there is an unfortunate change of guards in management.
