Re: What are you watching right now?

^ Everyone says his best movie as director is Unforgiven ('92), but Mystic River ('03), Million Dollar Baby ('04) and Grand Turismo ('08) are all outstanding as well.

His first try as direcor, I think, The Eiger Sanction ('75) is my favorite Clint-as-director-and-lead-actor movie. I also have a huge soft spot for High Plains Drifter ('72), The Gauntlet ('77), Pale Rider ('85), In the Line of Fire ('93) and Space Cowboys (2000). One of these days I'll put my panties on and watch Bridges of Madison County, but that day is not today.

He's had an amazing career, he never stops. He's 91.

Last night, I watched The Forgotten Battle (Original title: De slag om de Schelde) on Netflix. It had a powerful effect on me.

Re: What are you watching right now?

Some dude restored an avant-garde, live-action with stop-motion animation Halloween film from 1933. The Devil's Ball. It's flipping genius. The lighting, the dialog, the music, the animation, the imagination, the pure weirdness... the melancholy!

Re: What are you watching right now?

The Eiger Sanction noted above reminds me of Socerer (1977) and The Stuntman (1980).  All three under rated in my view.

Re: What are you watching right now?

Sorcerer is a much better film than The Eiger Sanction. Arguably.
-edit- BZZZZT... Ravel String Quartet and French intrigue does not trump Clint climbing the Eiger. North face, of course.

Re: What are you watching right now?

We went to Wengen (Switzerland) where The Eiger Sanction was filmed.  It is an outstanding base from where to hike.  We were in May so quite a bit of snow at elevation.  The hotel is very much like it looks in the film. The train is exact.

The Conversation (1974) is worth it also.

Adding to the list of K dramas on Netflix which are a must watch: Law School / 로스쿨. Pretty gudd.

Woo, another nice K drama on Netflix: 그 남자의 기억법. Briddy gudd situational comedy in there.

Honorable mention goes to Polish crime production The Mire for being better than any low-end high-cost German TV drama production (a phrase that happens to refer to ALL German TV productions, it's all shit).

More recommended K drama by me:

Lost (인간실격) (2021) - This drew my attention because I saw the Japanese title of the series first, which is 人間失格, No Longer Human, and refers to the famous literary work of the same title by Osamu Dazai. Dark, and good variation on the No Longer Human theme.

My Name (마이 네임) (2021) - This one is on Netflix and heavily (?) advertised (at least to the folks among us who have been using N for only accessing K drama for a year). Gritty and brutal, reminds me of True Grit, the 2010 Spielberg movie.

Tell Me What You Saw (본 대로 말하라) (2020) - Serial murders in rural Korea.

Lawless Lawyer (무법 변호사) (2018) - Despite the soapy title (common theme within the genre) unexpectedly brutal noir crime/thriller show. As many K series, picks a few strong themes and explores them.

Re: What are you watching right now?

If I have any love for motcycles (and I do), it's because of the 1971 film On Any Sunday (featuring Steve McQueen) that I saw as a kid. It's on YouTube ATM (with ads)...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4H9xfKW0zJE

Favorite scene (if childhood memory serves me right)... They're doing a big dirt-hill climb, over a 100 meters easily and steep as hell. They show a bunch of failed attempts. Then one guy rides the whole way up, effortlessly it seems, and at the top turns the bike around without putting his foot on the ground and rides back down. I'll post the time-stamp when it comes up. Great film.

It starts at 1:07:24. Widowmaker. 600ft, average incline 45 degrees. I half remembered it, he did put his foot down and it was the next guy they show that made it. Here's the scrot of Malcolm Smith riding back down a 45 degree incline...
