Good one! It starts off as a fairly standard cover of the track and then takes an unexpected turn at about 5:00. I'd like to hear some of their other covers too; if Geezer Butler likes their cover of "Iron Man", it must be good.

Thanks!

A short set of Grace Jones 80's covers. She/her band always reimagine these amazing tracks.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Piano music by Vsevolod Zaderatsky. Written 1937-39 in Kolyma. It is hard to understand how one can write such music in such circumstances.

^ Blacklisted.

However, you are aware of Quatuor pour la fin du temps (Quartet for the end of time), aren't you? Composed by Olivier Messiean in 1941 while he was in the concentration camp Stalag VIII-A. Premiered in that camp that year on broken instruments. His most important work, both musically and historically.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Yes, I am. I have that music on vinyl so I have known it for a long time. Weren't Stalags POW camps rather than 'concentration camps'? I think Messiean even got some help with sheet music paper from the Germans. The camps in Kolyma was a completely different kettle of fish.

This book is better than anything I have read by Solzhenitsyn:

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Yes, POW camp, my bad.

Wikipedia wrote:

A detailed description of conditions in the camps is provided by Varlam Shalamov in his Kolyma Tales. In Dry Rations he writes: "Each time they brought in the soup... it made us all want to cry. We were ready to cry for fear that the soup would be thin. And when a miracle occurred and the soup was thick we couldn’t believe it and ate it as slowly as possible. But even with thick soup in a warm stomach there remained a sucking pain; we’d been hungry for too long. All human emotions—love, friendship, envy, concern for one’s fellow man, compassion, longing for fame, honesty—had left us with the flesh that had melted from our bodies...."

Yes, I usually don't think such questions make much sense since it depends on mood, time of year, weather... I can end up with anything between Blues Brothers and Buxtehude...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

OK, so what about some Swedish jazz?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPGX5RP … 9VdCVAG9Cl
This guy studied electrical engineering at the same uni as I did but a generation earlier. I don't think he ever worked as an electrical engineer.

This album plus another one in the same style but based on Swedish folk music made his fame and became a curse since this was all audiences asked for all the time while most of his jazz did not sound like this.

He passed away in a car accident in the late 1960s.

^ Same! big_smile

Some sweet jazz. On top of everything else, that is some superb drumming.

Let's go with E.S.T. The pianist, Esbjorn Svensson, was also Swedish and also died young, in a tragic scuba-diving accident.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhdlVXxp1nw

His repeatedly reaching over the piano on the second track is him applying and removing and applying and removing a chain or something over the strings, you can here the tonal difference.

Sounds like the Sabs with Ozzy (maybe the "pigs" refers to War Pigs?).
