Re: What are you listening to right now?

@john
Electronic music owes Muslimgauze more than it cares to admit. I have linked him before a couple of times on this thread (and possibly the #! version as well).

That Bandcamp page is mostly a collection of re-issues he had with a single label, Staalplaat (afaict). There's still so much work of his out there, some of it not even digitized. Also, imho, there really isn't a "definitive" album from him. His body of work is so vast and varied, it's practically impossible.

I recall one night in England (maybe Manchester, maybe Sheffield, can't remember) many years ago where a selector acquaintance showed me a R-DAT casette of Muslimgauze material, claiming only a dozen of em being in circulation. There's even stuff of his released exclusively on niche formats like MiniDisc!

With regards to labels, the stuff he released on Soleilmoon Recordings was, for me, particularly memorable. Veiled Sisters is a personal favourite of mine. The closest thing to it on that Bandcamp page is probably Betrayal.

That's DUC material, thanks! It's a 20 minute download on my box, at least. I'm gonna cut that bit...

Really? I can't use that slang phrase anymore?

Balls.

I shall judiciously edit that track to my best capacity. First cut will be to start at 12:12. I'll have to play some Material after that. Maybe some El Shankar after that.

RIP Jon Hassell. Most know him from his Fourth World gigs and various collabs with Eno, but he did a lot more. Turns out his debut LP got remastered and re-issued on Bandcamp recently; https://jonhassell.bandcamp.com/album/v … remastered

Uh... +1? Doesn't seem respectful enough but anything more would be garish.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

@glitter thanks again for pushing Muslimgauze. Great discovery - for me anyway. Wikipedia has a page which shows at least how incredibly productive he was: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muslimgauze

Already liked Mullah Said a lot, but now listening to Veiled Sisters, and indeed it's great too. YouTube playlist here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPrGPNM … 4qVQJ08Rss

@hhh hate to gloat, but you seem to have a somewhat slow web connection. The above whole playlist came down for me in less than a minute. (Although this is one of those cases where it might be better to have the whole thing in one file and avoid sudden silences.)

---
And now, Jon Hassel!
A friend lent me a cassette some 30 years ago, which I copied and loved. (Haven't listened to any of my hundreds of cassettes for so long: digitation is one of those huge long-put-off jobs, along with photo negatives.)

Vernal Equinox isn't the one I heard (probably this one) but nice it is for sure.

Rest in peace, Jon.

Wow. glittersloth & Jimbo_G, thanks for providing so much new listening material. Have it all lined up now, will probably spend the rest of the day listening, so I can't give any detailed feedback yet.

I should credit where I discovered this video; it was on the blog of someone who had a hit record in the UK in the late 70s;

https://driver67.com/2015/07/24/soccer- … moneys-on/

Hm.

First of all, I liked the video you linked and am now checking out Viva Voce on YT.
And yes, I think she's pretty.
But why does a woman who just dresses normally have to be a soccer mom? I hate that. It never would've crossed my mind if that blogger (and you) hadn't put it like that.
I also don't like that the blogger felt the need to point out that he finds her playing a guitar solo sexy.

If that solo was played by a normally dressed man there'd be no ridiculous stereotyping and there wouldn't be an outtake video of it.

OTOH I think it's important to point out "such cases" in case somebody poses that women always play inferior roles (in pop music) or some such.

tl;dr: that article mentions some interesting indie bands that played in Portland in 2007.

Well, that was not much of a discussion IMHO. All participants shared the same world view and the people they discussed were represented by sound bites. I think this is the problem: the polarization, the lack of dialogue.

Anyways I, you might find some of this interesting: https://soundcloud.com/war_college

Anyways II, another show from WNYCStudios is one of my pod-cast favorites: https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/radiolab

/Martin

I wouldn't exactly call it a discussion either, but it was good journalism on an important topic that tends to receive less attention now, globally.

Anyhow, thanks for the links, already added to my podcast app.

I dunno, I could do a hundred stereotypical outtakes (one for each time he brushes his hair back, see Tender Surrender) for any Steve Vai performance. But then again he's never dressed normally...

The Police, live in 1979...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MwKstla6w0

Sting, Stewart Copeland... this really shows how important Andy Summers was, right from the start. So subtle. If I asked you, great power trio guitarists, you'd say Hendrix and Clapton. Summers had a better trio. Great minimal voicings, great tone selections and great dynamics.

Sorry, but I'm not going to be browbeaten into abandoning the definition of the word "discussion".
Look it up. It's pretty much the same as "conversation", ie people talking about something.
Because representatives of all world views were not present does not prevent those who were there from having a discussion of the problems faced by American democracy. They shared what they knew and what they thought about it. They had a discussion. No problem.

^ Might just be a culture-clash, In some cultures, "discussion" might imply "debate", depending on what language they speak in their head before the conversion to sterling.

Wait, that track totally represents the Corporate Oligarchy that has taken over the world to its ruin. Listen to that repressive beat, it represents the violence inherent in the system.

Anarcho-syndicalist commune, I wish. Lob me a scimitar already, you moistened bint, I want to skin some cats.

I'm not trying to browbeat you you into anything.
All I said is that debate (let's agree on that term) is not the only marker for defining good journalistic content.

I listened to 2 episodes of [this podcast recommended by Martin](https://soundcloud.com/war_college), and I wouldn't exactly call that a debate either - I could apply the same criticism that you (Martin) applied to the episode I shared.

But it's great journalism.

And I think I can see your point: they seem to deliberately choose speakers whose POV does not cater to one of the 2 sides normally chosen in big political topics.
Seeing both sides, if you will.

Listened to the Sparta one. That is not journalism. That's a bit of history and a lot of opinion. It's pure cringe to my ears. Maybe I picked the wrong show.

BTW, journalism and debate/discussion are entirely separate things. Journalism is "who what where when why how", debate is I say THIS is "who what where when how why"!
