Hostile takeover of Freenode IRC network (control + user data)

See: https://www.kline.sh, https://blog.bofh.it/debian/id_461

Via: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27207440

Previously (leaked draft 5 days ago): https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27153338

Open letter by community ops: https://gist.github.com/shadowcat-mst/9 … aeff31baad

#bunsenlabs is still on Freenode; the channel will move to another IRC network that is not under corporate control sometime in the future (not an announcement yet, waiting for a bit).

Re: Hostile takeover of Freenode IRC network (control + user data)

This is not good at all for the freenode community and I will remove my account from there as well. Thanks for the headsup @twoion, and perhaps why not shut down the BL channel there for now?

Many FOSS projects are moving to Libera Chat. I have set up an account, there.

Took a look at it, and maybe the BL channel should move there.

EDIT: I set one up there as well and configured HexChat for it.

Re: Hostile takeover of Freenode IRC network (control + user data)

Dunno yet. OFTC is more stable and venerable (also home to Debian). The difference is that it demands that off topic channels (channels not related to FOSS project work or use) be secret but obivously #bunsenlabs is not in that category. #xonotic at last has already moved to l.c.

OFTC is another good network too as I'm in a few channels on it. Another good place to consider a move to.

Void moved to libera chat.

Not shilling for them; just another option.

Re: Hostile takeover of Freenode IRC network (control + user data)

Lmao, freenode staff has highjacked channels of Gentoo and Ubuntu projects: https://www.gentoo.org/news/2021/05/26/ … acked.html, https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubunt … 01926.html. So that's it for Freenode. All of the mentioned are moving to libera.chat. BL will move to l.c as well, why not, it's not like the old channel has seen that many users. The setup of the channel #bunsenlabs is in progress.

That confirms my biggest fear about this hostile takeover: channels themselves getting taken over. Hope other projects get moving or else risk their channels getting taken over.

Re: Hostile takeover of Freenode IRC network (control + user data)

Also to be safe DO NOT click on ANY links in any of those channels on Freenode...they might lead to malware. Just a fair warning.

EDIT: Dropped my account on Freenode. Shame since I was on that network for nearly 20 years and seen channels come and go.

Looks like the guy who purchased Freenode is going to end up with nothing but a whole lot of bad karma.

Re: Hostile takeover of Freenode IRC network (control + user data)

I'am still unclear on what kind of gain can the new owner achieve with all this? Sounds like a PR nightmare, huge one. edit: Actually this entire story is strange enough that I suspect LGM.
