Re: What are you listening to right now?

Thanks to whomever posted Alice Sara Ott here a while back. This just appeared in my YT feed as a result, Beethoven Piano Concerto #3...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PM0HqmptYlY

Concerto is an Italian word meaning "harmonize", but derived from a Latin word meaning the opposite, concertare, meaning "to aggressively contest, dispute or debate".

And the concerto format reflects both of those origins. Very melodic, very harmonic, but full of contrasts. In the big picture, 3 movements... fast, slow and often in a related minor key to contrast the major first movement, and finally fast again, and faster than the first movement (and usually in a major key again, but not here, it ends in a minor key).

Within the movements, it's a whole barrel full of monkeys of contrast. Orchestra vs soloist, major vs minor, bombastic vs ethereal, brass vs strings vs woodwinds vs percussion, treble vs bass, strict rhythm vs a flexible solo cadenza, etc...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Right, and here's a Mozart Piano concerto. I had one really hard class when I studied at The New England Conservatory of Music where the professor would drop a needle in the middle of a Haydn or Mozart or Beethoven piece of orchestral or chamber music, and you had to answer which composer it was. Compare this to the Beethoven that you might have just listened to...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-s68kHOnpiE

One give away is Mozart's use of chromaticism, which I mentioned before in this thread recently. He loves slipping down the scale in half-steps. Also Beethoven adds way more contrast. He gets LOUD, his cadenzas are unexpected and extended, he will use repetition as a motif, etc...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Violin served three five ways. Bring out the Holy Hand Grenade!

Salut d'Amour, E. Elgar - Anastasiya Petryshak

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GoUuozWmoFM

The Four Seasons, A. Vivaldi: Winter - Anastasiya Petryshak

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2wBXUEz_sQ

My idol, the short French man with his sequential rock/jazz fusion based on his classical violin training. He played and recorded with Stephane Grappelli, he's a monster. Jean Luc Ponty - Cosmic Messenger (live in 1981)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKpsZqpmlDo

Mirage, live in 1982, playing the 5-string fiddle which he invented, the low C string makes the instrument both a violin and a viola. I've played one of these, the addition of a fifth string means you need really precise bowing to play the intended string. That's Daryl Stuermer on guitar...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8c4pV1gKrzk

Studio recording of Cosmic Messenger from 1978 or something. My favorite hard-rock track ever. You give me Led Zep? I give you this, Jean Luc Ponty and Daryl Stuermer (guitarist from Genesis)..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTC-OjgwLxg

Play that loud with some bass mixed in. It's straight-up sequential prog-rock, but I'll put it up against Ozzy or AC/DC any day.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

This is pretty good. Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time ("unplugged, live in studio on Howard Stern, 1995)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KwpWvaJf-U

The fiddler makes a huge mistake which pretty much ruins the performance... He plays the whole time (and out-of-tune for a bunch of it). If he had taken some breathers, woven things in a little more tastefully, a hit.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

re: Steven Wilson
Had no idea he released two more albums since I last checked him out. Raven That Refused To Sing was quite good, though imho peaked too early with that monstrous guitar solo in track 2. Drive Home by Guthrie Govan (improvised, one take, you can hear the string snapping in the solo and he just plays on like nothing happened). Also liked some of Porcupine Tree's early work. Does Wilson still go on stage barefooted?

Geez I'm so out of the loop with rock music these days. Been too insular lately.
Even Guthrie's band had a new album out two years ago which I just found out about;

To quote wikipedia

In 2017 The Daily Telegraph described him as "a resolutely independent artist" and "probably the most successful British artist you've never heard of"

I'm following his work since the mid nineties. Here is an example with Porcupine Tree from 2005

Thanks for that one; I didn't know they'd made any commercials for breakfast cereal.

It segues into "She's A Rainbow" from the band's brief psychedelic period in the late 60s (which I like but a lot of people who follow the Stones don't).

Re: What are you listening to right now?

i'm at this moment listening to an old skool 2-step garage mix just to pass away the hours.
bass heavy music doesn't translate to these tiny speakers too well, but it's all not lost on me.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

@al has thread up which somehow I have made controversial due to loose lips and sensitive ships, it called "Concert List".

I think it has value, we can separate live and live-in-studio posts to that thread and studio recordings to this one. Please post appropriately...

Mike Oldfield - Return To Ommadawn

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-nptvm9-hE

One thing I find interesting about this album is that before he made it, Mike actually consulted his fans on social media and asked them what sort of album they would like him to make. The strong majority opinion was that they wanted him to go back to his style from the 70s - which he did.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

My radio show airs in 2 hours, I think it's a repeat this week, but what's playing now is also awesome dub. I think I'm making an impact on the programming. You're standard dancehall or commercial reggae set ain't gonna cut it...
